  2. WKSA Facts • 2012 – current • 2012/2013 – 27 participants; 13 districts; grades 2 – 12; several low performing schools • 2013/2014 – 45 participants; 15 districts; grades 2-12; new districts and waiting list • New participants – 25 were returning teachers!

  4. Agenda • Meetings: • After school 4:00 – 7:00 • Two substitute days • Summer ~5 days • Webinars ~1/month • Bi-monthly meetings • Small group AND large group • Hands-on and modeling • PROFESSIONAL LEARING COMMUNITIES!!!!!

Design and Goals Five Main Components: *Content-based and methods-based PD, including science literacy *Next Generation Science Standards *21st Century Learning Skills *Inquiry-based curricula *Classroom applications using data, formative assessment and coaching strategies *Leadership applications toward student success

Content-based and methods- based PD with science literacy MSU literacy consultant – Constance Alexander • Modeled: interviewing techniques and article production • Extracting information from quick reads with informational text • Science content emphasized by Dr. Rebecca Brown, West Kentucky Community and Technical College PLCs!!!!!! Teacher Created Materials – partner – extremely valuable and classroom-ready lessons

  8. continued • Teacher Created Materials: • Student-centered strategies to: • Foster inquiry • Increase vocabulary in science classroom • Reading/writing strategies in science classroom • Differentiation Strategies • Multiple Intelligences • Discrepant Events

  10. 21st Century Learning Skills • Technology-rich collaboration, creation and contribution • TCM: webinars one/month, each teacher was supplied a set of e-books • MSU: videoconferencing and virtual field trips demonstrated – Ron Milliner of MSU • Reading/Writing strategies: in-depth study and development ready for classroom use! PD time was used for explanation and modeling of strategies

Standards-based curricula • Participants shared strategies learned with colleagues in their schools • Participants created and shared lesson plans within grade levels and beyond (helped to adapt) • Coaching by TCM: Eric LeMoine visited classrooms as an assistant, not evaluator!  • ALWAYS kept science content in foreground of PDs and NGSS

Data and Formative Assessment • MOSART (Misconceptions-Oriented Standards-based Assessment Resources for Teachers) test increased 25% in student proficiency (pre/post tests) • Biology end of course information • Teacher self-reflection and personal evaluation. Showed growth in both self and students • Dr. Robert Lyons – MSU – analyzes data from tests and evaluations to help establish more appropriate needs- based PDs

Leadership – student success • Monthly advisory council meeting of superintendents in West Kentucky Educational Cooperative led by Dr. John Settle – they were given updates of all events and made suggestions for future activities. • Data was used by TCM in creating professional development days thus improving teacher quality and student achievement • Teachers used data to analyze gaps in teaching

Successes • Increased student proficiency in pre/post tests by 25% • Teachers WANTED to attend meetings • Eric/TCM and WKSA have become and remain a strong educational unit • Principals have become involved in attending our meetings • Superintendents, this year, requested their teachers be a part of WKSA • Professional Learning Communities have created and will sustain bands among regional science teachers and provide on-going support • As a result of WKSA, regional science teachers have a stronger connection to faculty from Murray State and West Ky Community and Technical College • Kym Mizell – Clark Elementary, Paducah KY

  16. Successes continued • Teachers, through their own excitement and pedagogical changes, have recruited colleagues • Megan S. – KTIP • Beth S.– Calloway County Middle • Stagnant teacher…has become a leader! • High School teachers – found resources – people • We are helping students achieve!

  19. Lessons Learned • Teachers are READY for appropriate and applicable science strategies • Teachers took information gleaned from PD back to their schools and used/shared/adapted lessons • Science teachers are the BEST….
