Implant • Effectiveness: <1/1000 pregnancy in 3 years (>99%) • What: releasing progesterone, stops ovulation, thickens cervical mucous, thins uterine lining. • Lasts: 3 years. • Fertility: when implant removed, fertility returns to normal. • Periods: may stop, be irregular or longer. • Irregular/prolonged periods is usual reason for removal

Injection • Effectiveness: <4/1000 pregnancy (>99%) • What: releasing progesterone, stops ovulation, thickens cervical mucous, thins uterine lining. • Lasts: 12 weeks – depo-provera, or 8 weeks – noristerat. • Periods: stop, irregular or longer. • Fertility: may take some time to return once stopped (>12 weeks). • Weight gain • Average 3kg over 2 years

  4. IUD • Effectiveness: <2/100 pregnancies in 5 years. • What: stops sperm meeting ovum and stops implantation • Lasts: 5-10years • Periods: heavier, longer or more painful. • Fertility: when removed, returns to normal.

  5. IUS • Mirena coil • Effectiveness: <1/100 pregnancies in 5 years (99%) • What: Thins uterus lining to prevent implantation, thickens cervical mucous, may stop ovulation. • Lasts: 5 years • Periods: lighter, shorted, less painful. • Symptoms settle by 3-6 months often amenorrhoeic • Fertility: When removed returns to normal. • Actinomyces on smear test – common commensal no action needed unless symptomatic
