  1. Rainforests Lindsey Simpson Project 1 EDCI 270 Section 1101

  2. Learners • Third to fourth grade students, who have a range in ability. These children enjoy hands on activities and love learning more about the outside world. This section on rainforests are part of an unit on various ecosystems around the world.

  3. Learning environment • These students will be in a computer lab. They may either work individually or talk quietly with their classmates at neighboring computers. We have already discussed the rainforest in class and have done some classroom activities involving various aspects about the rainforest. They are now ready to work on their own.

  4. Objectives • After going through readings about the layers, animals, people, and climate of the rainforest, the students will be quizzed on their knowledge. They must complete the quiz by the end of our lab time with a 10/10.

  5. Motivation • We will be learning about the rainforest through readings, pictures, and ending with a scenario! Just follow the directions and you will make it through the rainforest just fine. Have fun and good luck!

  6. orientation • We have already briefly discussed locations of rainforests and the benefits of them. We have also talked about the destruction of rainforests and have set up a class fund to help raise money to save the rainforests. This gives students a chance to learn and make a positive change in the world. Since we have already done all this, students should be well prepared for the following assignment.

  40. Step 4: explore more! • Welcome to Explore More!!! Explore More includes a Scenario. You will have to complete the Scenario in order to complete this tutorial. Click the arrow below to learn more about the Scenario!

  41. Scenario • So here’s the situation: You are an environmentalist and have noticed a slow decrease in the number of gorillas in the rainforest. You think it’s because of the nearby lumber company cutting down so many trees in the rainforest. Without the trees, the gorillas have no place to live. You and other officials are very concerned about the gorillas. It is up to you to take action in order to protect the gorillas. What will you do? Click on the arrow to see your options.

  42. Options • Below are your choices to help save the gorillas. Choose wisely! a.) Talk to the lumber company. b.) Advertise to raise awareness and funding for the gorillas’ habitat. c.) Take no action. d.) Relocate gorillas to a different area of the rainforest. e.) Options A, B, and D.

  43. Option a • By talking to the lumber company, you managed to reach an agreement with them. They agreed to cut down fewer trees, but will remain in the rainforest. This agreement will save approximately TWO gorillas every year. Good work! Click the arrow to finish up!

  44. Option b • Your advertising to raise awareness and funding has helped save 1,000 acres of rainforest and therefore FOUR gorillas. You made a smart choice! Click to finish up!

  45. Option c • By taking no action the rainforest will continue to be destroyed and more gorillas will die. Everyone wishes you would have taken a stronger action to save the gorillas. Click the arrow to finish the scenario up!

  46. Option d • Your plan to relocate the gorillas, while a good idea, fell through due to lack of funding and no where to relocate the gorillas to. Plan out more next time. Click to finish the scenario!

  47. Option e • You have done a very thorough job and it paid off! You have secured 3,000 acres of safe land for the gorillas. This land will hopefully give them room to flourish once again! You have done a fantastic job! Click the arrow to finish!

  48. Scenario summary • Well environmentalists! How did it go? Did you make good or bad decisions? Hopefully, you managed to save some gorillas!

  49. Congratulations! • You have survived the rainforest! You are now a rainforest expert! Click for bibliography.

  50. Layers of the rainforest • The rainforest has FOUR main layers. The emergent layer, the canopy layer, the understory layer, and the forest floor. The emergent layer is the topmost layer. It consists of the tallest trees and is where there is the most sunlight. The canopy layer is the main layer of the rainforest and forms a sort of roof over the two underlying layers. The third layer down, the understory layer, receives little sunlight so therefore most plants have very big leaves to capture more. The bottommost layer, the forest floor, is very dark and no plants grow here. A lot of decay occurs at this layer. Click on the arrow to move on to the next reading!
