BACKGROUND Visit Us: www.nnc.gov.ph Like Us on Facebook: National Nutrition Council (Official) • In 2010, FAO of the United Nations, in partnership with NNC modelled an FNS-EWS in Ragay, Camarines Sur • Under the Millennium Development Goal Achievement Fund Joint Programme entitled, “Ensuring Food Security and Nutrition for Children 0-24 months old in the Philippines”.

  3. WHAT IS AN EARLY WARNING SYSTEM (EWS)? Visit Us: www.nnc.gov.ph Like Us on Facebook: National Nutrition Council (Official) • A form of monitoring and analysis of relevant information that may foretell a possible crisis such as food shortage or health problem • A regular and periodic collection of relevant data (e.g. food production, climate, food prices, etc.) to determine status of food supply and food security in the municipality

  5. How does the EWS operate? The local EWS Team presents the findings to the Mayor and the MNC Quarterly Data Collection (2 levels) - Municipal (secondary data) - Household (primary data) Data entered and analyzed using a simple data base The Mayor and the Municipal Council take action in cases of impending food crisis

PRESENTLY… Visit Us: www.nnc.gov.ph Like Us on Facebook: National Nutrition Council (Official) • Bicol Region currently monitoring project through the PMC (Project Management Committee) in 6 municipalities • DSWD, in partnership with FAO and WFP also established EWS in Upi, Maguindanao and Atok, Benguet

PRESENTLY… Visit Us: www.nnc.gov.ph Like Us on Facebook: National Nutrition Council (Official) • NNC and FAO expanding EWS in ten (10) municipalities for 2014 in 10 different regions • UNICEF, in partnership with FAO is expanding EWS in 5 municipalities in Aklan Province and 5 municipalities in Capiz Province

Criteria for Selection of Areas Visit Us: www.nnc.gov.ph Like Us on Facebook: National Nutrition Council (Official) • High prevalence and magnitude of underweight under-5 children as indicated by latest OPT results • Willingness of area to participate in the project and provide counterpart if necessary • Potential for successful implementation and use of EWS in local nutrition program management in the LGU • Accessibility of the area
