  1. 2008-09 CNBMobile Broadband Product Strategy Update Scott MenscherAugust 8, 2008

  2. Agenda • Topics to Discuss • Current WWAN status • 2008-2009 hardware and software product roadmap (includes MRD info) • WiMAXupdate

  3. Executive Summary • Summary: • CNB is ramping up on WWAN • Selling 300+ units per month today on CTO • 1 WWAN-enabled platform today • 7 platforms by mid 2c09 • 12 platforms by 2010 • By 3c08, all 4 regions will be shipping WWAN • Goal is to push WWAN to be commoditized and reduce product complexity • Switching to Gobi WWAN in 3c08 – game changer that allows customer choice and supports both CDMA and GSM networks • Late 2009 goal on software side is to pre-install HP CM 3.0 across all CNB platforms, regardless of WWAN • Pushing HP branded generic CM • WiMAX has pretty much taken a step backwards at this point from the last time we evaluated the technology • Decision points: • Do we want to pre-install HP CM 3.0 across all CNB platforms in 3c09? • Do we want to enable GPS before 3c09? Like in 1.5c09 w/ Van Gogh? • When do we launch WiMAX(if at all)?

  17. WWAN Module Comparisons

  18. 3c09 Switch to Gobi II • Gobi II Added Features: • Full support for GPS and A-GPS • Support for HSPA 7.2DL/5.76UL • Lower cost (how much lower is TBD)

  19. GPS Support • Availability: • Will definitely have GPS support by 3c09 with Gobi II; evaluating GPS sooner, though, with Gobi – possible launch with Van Gogh? • GPS Features: • Standard feature for all WAN notebooks – business and consumer • A-GPS support or equivalent • HP CM include ability to provide location information/coordinates • Support HP ProtectTools solutions remote track/lock/wipe solutions; current candidates from Absolute Software (Computrace) and HP Mobility Solutions Organization (based on bitfone technology) • Expose NMEA port for 3rd party mapping and navigation applications (support MS Streets, Navtech, TomTom) • Stretch target - GPS port exposed/works in Linux; currently don’t know what Linux GPS applications will be available; need to investigate • Enable other opportunities such as MNO LBS, regional attach sales of GPS applications and services

  20. 2009 WWAN Software Strategy • Software in 2009: • Image strategy • Incorporate WAN support in standard images; no separate WWAN images starting with 2009 platforms, except for Telco sell-through models • HP CM 3.0 broadly deployed on all WWAN and non-WWAN models • Links between Total Care Setup, HP Advisor and HP CM to drive awareness and activations • Localizations • Full set of localizations; same as non-WWAN models • Rollout • 3c08: HP CM 1.1 • 1c09: HP CM 2.0 (web update) • 2c09: HP CM 2.0 (on-image) • 3c09: HP CM 3.0

  21. 2c08 WWAN Software • HP Connection Manager 1.0: • Developed by Sierra and based on their “Watcher” client • Generic connection manager able to access most GSM networks • WWAN functionality ONLY • App to be used with Sora GSM module (EMEA only in 2c08) • Warbler CDMA module (only U.S.) will still use Verizon VZAccess client • Uses Welcome Module 1.0 to install client manager and help with activation • Not a great solution, but a decent stopgap before Welcome Module 2.0 goes live in 3c08 • HP CM 1.0 and Welcome Module 1.0 are the software deliverables BNB used for their 2007 WWAN products • For 2008 (summer), BNB is switching to Gobi and therefore HP CM 1.1 and WM 2.0

  27. 3c08 WWAN Software - Screenshots

  28. 2c09 WWAN Software • HP Connection Manager 2.0: • Developed by Birdstep • Will be available as web update for HP CM 1.1 in early 2009 • CNB will add to image in 2c09 (except for Van Gogh, which will be 1.5c09) • Just like 1.1, but will add back in the missing features that originally gave the application real value as an aggregator of connectivity • Most notably, that includes WLAN, Ethernet, modem, and BT support • May support GPS • Development schedule still under review, but October is targeted • Will use Welcome Module 2.0

  29. 2c09 WWAN Software - screenshots

  30. 3c09 WWAN Software • HP Connection Manager 3.0: • Brand new, redesigned CM • Developer is TBD • MRD is being finalized now • New features scoped for HP CM 3.0: • New profile setup wizard • New, easier to use UI • WiMAX support • GPS support • HP Wireless Assistant module (no HP WA integration, however, until 4.0) • HP Home Network Center integration • Diagnostic tools • Total Care Setup integration • Easier Bluetooth pairing • Goal is to deploy HP CM 3.0 software across ALL CNB platforms

  31. Linux Support • Connection Manager for Linux: • Currently under evaluation and is being planned for 2009 • Schedule for delivery is TBD (estimate is mid 2009) • Will most likely be a separate application than HP CM • Will most likely be for WWAN connectivity only • Per 2009 WWAN MRD: • Linux distro’s to be tested: SUSE, Ubuntu (Symphony?), Redhat, Redflag • Stretch targets: Mandriva, Debian

  32. Operator-specific CM SUPPORT • Operator-Specific Connection Manager Software: • Per 2009 WWAN MRD: • Plan to support select MO CM’s per Telco strategy (now in development) • Operator CMs would be for Telco sell through model only; not for general distribution through HP channels • Models with operator CMs would not require any welcome module or HP-provided OTA/OTI activation capability

  33. WiMAX Update

  34. WiMAX Update • Proposed CNB WiMAX Launch: • WiMAX is currently being planned for 3c09 Intel Calpella launch • Kilmer Peak 1x2 module • HP CM 3.0 support • Platform(s) TBD • Why 3c09? • Network coverage will not be adequate until late 2009 (if then…) • User experience will be similar to WiFI hotspots, not like WWAN • Intel’s Echo Peak solution will not be fully baked until 1Q09, anyway • Ex: Echo Peak will not support Clearwire network until 2009 • 2nd generation module (Kilmer Peak) should be better and cheaper • Mass adoption is not expected until 2010 • Best Buy has changed its attitude towards WiMAX (for the worse) • Analysts have downplayed the technology • Can build a WiMAX story around Intel Calpella launch

  38. WiMAX forecasts

  39. Recommendations • Decision points: • Do we want to pre-install HP CM 3.0 across all CNB platforms in 3c09? • Yes, pre-install the software, as it will add value and allow us to catch up with competition • Will depend on $$, delivery schedule, and performance • Do we want to enable GPS before 3c09? Like in 1.5c09 w/ Van Gogh? • Would be nice to build a story around GPS • Have the potential to be first to market (or close to it) in launching GPS on consumer units • When do we launch WiMAX(if at all)? • Current recommendation is to launch 1 or 2 platforms in 3c09 with Calpella
