  1. Group Dynamics and Roles Chapter 11: How do the roles of group members influence a group’s effectiveness?

  2. Reviewing Key Ideas: • Importance of Group Dynamics • Group dynamics are the processes that help groups to function. • Without group dynamics there would be nothing to keep the group from being just a collection of individuals.

  3. Reviewing Key Ideas: • How Task & Maintenance Roles are Different: • Task = performing the task. • Maintenance = maintaining group cohesion • Example of how they can be similar: • Opinion-giver (task role) who gets his/her information across by expressing humor (tension-reliever—maintenance role).

  4. Reviewing Key Ideas: • Defining Self-Centered Roles: • These are roles that don’t take in account the purpose or best interests of the group. • They meet an individual’s needs, but harm the task or maintenance of the group. • Examples: • Blockers, Aggressors, Class Clowns, Dominators.

  5. Your Turn #1: • Re-read page 216 • In your own words, explain how Brian Tuckman and Scott Peck’s theories of group dynamics are similar and different. • This can be done through a Venn Diagram OR in a paragraph explanation (5-7 sentences in length).

  6. Your Turn #2: Key Vocabulary Work Turn to page 215 to get the list of Key Vocabulary for the chapter. Create a Vocabulary Chart like the one below for each one of the Key Vocabulary for chapter 11 (use ½ a page of paper per word):
