  1. Department of Andrology and Gynaecology, Manipal Andrology and Reproductive Services (MARS), Manipal Hospital, BANGALORE. (Affiliated to Manipal University) Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Embryology Embryology is the study of the development of fetus from the stage of fertilization to full grown infant. This course is aimed at teaching the students to learn the critical aspects of Embryology. The main intention of this program is to train students in IVF and ICSI laboratories of Infertility specialty hospitals as a part of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

  2. AIM, SCOPE & OBJECTIVES Aim: To help the students learn and understand the importance of Assisted Reproduction and techniques involved. Scope & Objectives: • The aims of this program are to deliver intensive teaching for students in both fundamental and applied aspects of subject areas directly related to clinical embryology such as human reproductive biology, embryology, infertility and ART. • To provide students with dedicated theoretical and practical training in basic laboratory research skills.

  3. Scope & Objectives contd.. • To ensure students understand and appreciate the ethical and legal issues associated with ART and the treatment of infertility. • To provide students with intensive ‘hands-on’ practical training in laboratory skills and ART, particularly gamete micromanipulation, intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). To provide, in the extended third term, high quality laboratory training in research methodology that can be applied to basic or applied aspects of reproductive science/clinical embryology in the future. • To encourage student understanding and appreciation of how current molecular technologies (such as the human genome sequencing project, embryonic stem cells, cloning, nuclear transfer and reprogramming) might relate to the future treatment of infertility and the ethical/legal issues involved. To understand how business management skills and quality control procedures are vital in the ART clinic. • To provide training in professional development and transferable skills. To build a network of potential leaders in clinical embryology for the future.

  4. COURSE CONTENTS • Anatomy and Physiology of Male and Female Reproductive system.   • Fundamentals of Clinical Embryology. • Biochemistry. • Elements of Male and Female infertility.  • Micromanipulation, IVF and ICSI. • Cryobiology and Cryopreservation.   • Project, thesis and presentation.

  5. OUTCOME • The students completing the Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Embryology develop all the first class and hands-on research experience. It provides the best possible input for students independent of whether their backgrounds are clinical or scientific, or their overall career aims. • The program acts as a gateway for students to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Developmental Biology, Embryology or other such allied areas. • This program gives a confidence for students to work in hospitals or research institutes as Embryologists or even to an extent of setting up their own laboratories.

  6. ADMISSION & FEES • Duration: The course is spread over 12 months/2 semesters including 60 hours of Theory and Practicals. • Eligibility criteria: MBBS, BVSc., BDS, MSc., PhD, BE (Biotechnology), Diploma in Assisted Reproductive Laboratory Technology (DARLT). • Intake: The program academic year starts in January.
