  1. 1900 tsiolkovsky started testing rockets

  2. Timeline Continues • 1914 a scientist named Goddard patented the first rocket Goddard first obtained public notoriety in 1907 when he fired a powder rocket in the basement of the physics building at WPI. School officials then took an immediate interest in Goddard's work and, to their credit, did not expel him for the incident.

  3. Timeline Coutinous • 1926 • Goddard launches the first successful rocketOn March 16, 1926, Robert Goddard successfully launched the first liquid-fueled rocket in Auburn, Mass. The first-of-its-kind rocket reached an altitude of 41 feet, lasted 2 seconds and averaged about 60 miles per hour.

  4. Timeline Continous • 1930 • V-2 spacecraft was made

  5. Timeline Continous • 1944 • V-2 spacecraft left earth’s atmosphere

  6. Timeline continous • 1954 • Viking spacecraft reach 159 miles above the earth. Experiments prompted by a 2008 surprise from NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander suggest that soil examined by NASA's Viking Mars landers . in 1976 may have contained carbon-based chemical building blocks of life.

  7. Timeline continous 1957 Soviet satellite, sputnik, became the first manmade object to orbit earth

  8. Timeline continous • 1961 • Soviet Yuri Gagarin becomes the first space traveler

  9. Timeline continous • 1967 • Photograph of the moon taken by lunar orbiter

  10. Timeline continous • 1969 • Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon Neil A. Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. He began his NASA career in Ohio.

  13. Timeline continous • 1973 • First U.S. space station launchedAmerica's first experimental space station, Skylab, was designed for long durations. Skylab program objectives were twofold: To prove that humans could live and work in space for extended periods, and to expand our knowledge of solar astronomy well beyond Earth-based observations. The program was successful in all respects despite early mechanical difficulties.

  14. Timeline continous • 1976 • Images from satellite show Martian soil Mars.
