  3. History of Edu-Make-It  Hi, I’m Kristy Maddison and I’m one of the first young people to attend Edu-Make-It in 1999 just after I had my son, Keegan. I felt uncomfortable going to a normal High School because I was now a single mum and I didn’t feel as though I would fit in. I felt that I would be judged for the circumstances I was in since having a baby at such a young age of 16. Edu-Make-It is open to disadvantaged, the homeless and young parents between the ages of 15 to 25 years old which is why I felt comfortable to attend. When I first started Edu-Make-It there was only me and one other person at the old Resource Centre. Our classroom was small with no computers because funding was limited because no one had heard of us because we were new. I was made one of the first representatives for Edu-Make-It and I represented St Vincent’s at a seminar held by the Lord Mayor Jim Soorley at Brisbane City Hall.

  4. (Cont) Before I started Edu-Make-It I was a young person in care and a resident at St Vincent’s Girls sharehouse, to learn the road to independence. Since I started Edu-Make-It I have completed Years 10 and 11 and I have been living in my own flat for the past 2 years. I have also completed a course through Brisbane City Council and have Certificate 1 in Horticultural Landscaping. Now that I’m 19 my confidence has risen and I’m hoping to achieve a traineeship in Horticulture. My advice for young people out there today is where there’s a will there’s a way, EDUCATION – MAKE IT! Now I’ll hand you over to Jade, who will be taking you in an activity.

  7. Edu-Make-It An alternative education program for young people between the ages of 15 and 25 years who are unable to attend mainstream High School.

  9. Description of Edu-make-it Model • Youth worker/tutors support group • Teachers/content off site i.e. BSDE • Adult learning principles applied • Small groups or individual • Self paced • On line, at home or on site learning • Holistic approach including fun factor

Six Principles for Facilitation of Adult Learning • Participation is voluntary • Effective facilitation is characterised by respect between facilitator and learners and among learners • Facilitation is collaborative • Praxis is at the heart of effective facilitation • Facilitation fosters critical reflection • Facilitation aims at nurturing self-directed, empowered adults. Education future options • The “Queensland the Smart State – Education and Training Reforms for the Future includes. “We want our young people to be learning or earning” • 30% do not complete high school • 10000 young people have not completed Yr 12 and are not working (15 to 17yearold) • Youth workers to work with young people at risk of leaving early(Youth Support Coordinators Department of Families) • Linkages between training and education • Fund alternative options!!!!
