  1. Audience and Writing

  2. For example: -Show how to build a house -Raise awareness of poverty -Bring comfort to those mourning a loss -etc. For example: -Parents of toddlers -College students -Car enthusiasts -etc. Genre Flexible; both determines and determined by: For example: -80s music -Iraq War -Murder mystery -etc. For example: -Formal -Technical -Accessible -etc.

  3. What Is Audience? • A group of people, usually demographically similar, that a “text” is intended for Think of Some Examples… TEXT AUDIENCE Call of Duty games  College-aged gamers __________________________ Students wanting to learn about urban poverty Voyage of the Dawn Treader (fantasy movie)  __________________ ___________________________  Elementary-school children Cover letter/resume ___________________________

  4. How Is Audience Related to Content? • What you actually say is very much determined by who you are saying it to. What might you send in a text message to… a parent as opposed to… a friend?

  5. To look at it a different way… • What you decide to depict depends on the reaction you want from the audience. Think about how a movie that celebrates war (like a black-and-white John Wayne film) might look and feel differently from a movie that shows the harsh realities ofwar (like Saving Private Ryan). What images might a movie glorifying war choose to show? What images might a realistic war movie choose to show?

  6. How Is Audience Related to Style? • How you say something is very much determined by who you are saying it to. Try this: Write a quick 3-4 sentence “Facebook post” to a friend about a memory you have from a vacation last summer. Write it EXACTLY as you would if you were posting to a close friend’s page (include abbreviations, emoticons, etc.)

  7. How Is Audience Related to Style? • How you say something is very much determined by who you are saying it to. Try this: NOW write a quick 3-4 sentence “Facebook post” to a respected teacher (you friended the summer after graduation) about the same memory. Write it EXACTLY as you would if you were posting to a teacher’s page.

  8. -Notice how your Facebook post takes on a completely different style even though the CONTENT stays the same for the most part. Finally, let’s take a look at how audience and purpose depend on one another.

  9. How Is Audience Related to Purpose? • Why you are saying something almost always depends on whom you are saying it to. Think about: Commercials. How does the point of the commercial change as the intended audience does? Purpose of Commercial? (directed at that audience) Intended Audience • Disabled/unemployed • Voters in an election year • Retired people • Socially concerned people • Elementary school kids • Murder mystery fans

  10. La Haine(1995): Questions for After Viewing • The Artist: Mathieu Kassovitz • Form: Film • Content: • What actually happens in the film? (Brief summary) ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________

Why? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________

  12. Style • Name THREE memorable stylistic choices (how the content was presented to us) you noticed about the movie 1) 2) 3) • Do you think these choices seemed to naturally match the content? Why or why not? __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________

  13. Purpose • What do you think the point of this movie was? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ • Audience • For whom was this movie intended? Why? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________

  14. Opinions • Can writer/director Mathieu Kassovitz—a middle class white guy—get away with making a movie about oppressed, impoverished minorities? Why or why not? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________

  15. Opinions • Is it ethical to have a big difference between the subject of the film (poor, young immigrants) and the intended audience (probably not poor, young immigrants)? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________
