PURPOSE for Writing • Know your purpose, or reason, for writing • Here are the main purposes for writing • to inform (pass on new information) • to explain (tell how to do something) • to entertain (tell a story, a poem, or a play) • to persuade (influence readers to do something or think in a certain way)

  3. AUDIENCE for Writing • Know who your readers are and always keep your audience in mind • This determines if your writing should be relaxed, formal, or somewhere in between • Your audience determines the words you choose, what information they might already know, and what they need to know
