  4. Standards for STEM in Maryland • Maryland State Science • Common Core Math AND English/Language Arts • Technological Literacy from ITEA (International Technology Education Association) • Maryland Technology Literacy

Unit: Letting STEM out of the BagLevel: Elementary, Grades 3-5 Performance task: The Principal has asked you to plan an introductory unit for students in grades 3-5 which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The unit should use an inquiry-based approach. The objective of the unit is to have the students design a tote bag for their STEM lessons, activities and supplies. Students will be responsible for: • Researching various RECYCLED materials for constructing the tote bag • Determining the size, shape and design of the bag • Designing a logo, representing STEM, for the bag

Group Activity • Revise the task: “Letting STEM Out of the Bag” to be more specific (what size, what use/purpose, what materials….) • Explain how you would use this activity with candidates in an Elementary STEM preparation program • Identify the next steps for this task • Be prepared to share

  8. Carryover • An amendment is required if the change is $1,000 or 15% of the total object, program, or category of expenditure, whichever is greater. • Any change greater than10% must be explained in the budget report. • All changes must be explained in progress reports.

  10. Assignment • Choose one resource that you have been using in your work on Elementary STEM • Upload it or post the link on the wiki (STEM resources) • Be prepared to give a 2 minute introduction/advertisement on the conference call in June
