Elementary Education: Concentration in STEM STEM Instructional Leader: Pre-K - 6 Maryland STEM Standards of Practice Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) Standards Common Core State Curriculum Key Program Assessments Clinical and Field Experiences Coursework Professional Development & Resources

  6. Guidelines for Development Elementary Education: Concentration in STEM STEM Instructional Leader: PreK-6

  7. Rationale I. Identify initiatives and/or resources that support the inclusion of STEM in your existing elementary preparation program. • How is your institution supporting your proposed program and what long-term commitments are in place to continue to support the program? • How are Arts and Science faculty supporting the inclusion of STEM at the Elementary level?

  8. Rationale II. Explain how an Elementary STEM program will enhance your work with local school systems • How is your proposed program aligned with the Local School System(s) vision for STEM?

  9. Teacher Preparation Programs: Maryland Redesign of Teacher Education: I. Strong content knowledge • Provide evidence of rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering and Math content (STEM Standards of Practice (SOP) #1) in coursework. • Provide opportunities in coursework and/or field & clinical experiences to demonstrate proficiency in the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math content (SOP#2).

  10. Teacher Preparation Programs: Maryland Redesign of Teacher Education: II. Extensive internship Candidates should demonstrate competence, comfort and confidence in their ability to deliver STEM instruction. • Describe opportunities during the internship for candidates to demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and communicating information (SOP#3), guiding students in the inquiry process (SOP #4), engaging students in logical reasoning (SOP #5), establishing collaborative STEM teams (SOP# 6) and applying technology appropriately (SOP #7) in integrated STEM lessons

  11. Teacher Preparation Programs: Maryland Redesign of Teacher Education III. Performance Assessment • Provide a plan to collect and monitor candidate performance data on key assessments aligned to the STEM Standards of Practice. The STEM Standards of Practice can be introduced and built on in a number of ways, but the alignment with appropriate key assessments should be meaningful.

  12. Teacher Preparation Programs: Maryland Redesign of Teacher Education: IV. Linkage with K-12 Priorities • Describe how the proposed program will contribute to candidate ability to teach diverse student populations by differentiating instruction adapting materials and resources and collaboratively plan and teach with specialized resource personnel. • Describe how the proposed program will complement your efforts to assess candidate proficiency on the Maryland Teacher Technology Standards (MTTS).

  13. Program Description: I. STEM Standards of Practice for Teachers must be embedded throughout this proposed program modification. Include a matrix to show how the STEM Standards of Practice and indicators will be embedded in program assessments.

  14. Program Description: II. Include new and/or revised course syllabi integral to the program.

  15. Program Description: III. Include new and/or revised key assessments and rubrics integral to the program.

  16. Capacity: Provide curriculum vitae/resume for all faculty and other individuals who have a significant role in this modified program.

  17. Special Issues/Circumstances I. Include letters of support from school systems, other colleges and universities, community colleges, state, and community agencies that are significantly involved in your proposed STEM program.

  18. Special Issues/Circumstances II. Include any additional information specific to your program design and implementation not included above.

Project Updates • January 31--Mid-Year Progress and Budget reporting period ends • February 28--Mid-Year Progress and Budget reports due • March 6 --Proposals submission deadline for new project proposals • Last week of April (TENTATIVE)—Elementary STEM Network meeting • July 18 and 19 —Summer Institute at the Chesapeake Bay Hyatt
