Brief background/Geographic specs • Founded by Dutch traders in 1652. • Established a checkpoint for the spice route between the Netherlands and the East. • Founded the city of Cape Town. • Total Area= 1,219,912 sq km (slightly less than twice the size of Texas) • Climate is mostly semiarid and subtropical along the east cost. Sunny days & cool nights. • 9 provices: Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North-west, Western Cape

South Africa from an Economical/ Global Perspective • South Africa is a middle-income, emerging market with an abundant supply of natural resources. • Well-developed: Financial, legal, communications, energy, and transportation. • 17th largest Stock Market in the world. • Modern Infrastructure supporting an efficient distribution of goods to major urban centers throught the region. • Economy is fiscally conservative , focuses on controlling inflation, maintaining a budget surplus, and supporting projects which increase job growth and household income.

Eskom the South African crises • At the start of 2008 South Africa began experincing an electrictity crises due to state power suppilier, Eskom’s, “load-shedding”cuts to residence and businesses in major cities. • South Africa is the number one producer of platinum and the secound largest producer of gold (Next to China). • Some of the World’s largest gold and platinum producers shut down underground mining operations due to Eskom’s forced load-shedding, commited to reducing power consumption by 10%. • This set commodity prices at an all time high. Gold rising to a price of $922.40/oz and platinum reaching $1,652/oz. • Eskom is working to reduce electricty demanded by 10%.

  5. “Load-shedding” • When a power company see’s that its demand is comeing close to its generating capacity it sends out a signal and cuts off power.

Eskom Cont. • Cut in power has slowed SA’s economic growth. • Eskom’s plans to outsource some of its departments, angers The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa). • Numsa plans to run a “disruptive” strike against Eskom’s outsourcing plans. • Could outsourcing be a form of racial discrimination?
