  1. The SWANO directory launch

  2. Who are we and why are we here? • We are an alliance of nine neurological organisations • All of us have a role in influencing the commissioning and provision of care for people with neurological conditions • Whilst retaining our individual identities as neurological organisations, we are working together on common issues where it is effective and efficient to do so. • Power in numbers!

  3. Why do we need this alliance? The NSF for Long-term (neurological) conditions – a ten-year plan for improvement There are clear advantages for statutory organisations to work in partnership with voluntary organisations, users and carers to meet these targets …..and yet liaising with each voluntary organisation individually would be: • Difficult for PCTs and Social Services Departments • Impossible for many voluntary organisations

  4. Prevalence in South West [1]

  5. Provide you with information • Look at the display stands today • Browse our websites • Check out the helpline/advice line services we all offer • www.swano.org.uk

  6. A specialist resource • Access to the latest research relating to each condition • Knowledge about particular equipment • There are few problems that we haven’t come across before

  7. Help with user and carer views • In touch with a large percentage of people with these conditions through: • Referrals from statutory services • Support groups • Tracking surveys (eg MND Association) • Focus groups

  8. Sharing good practice • We have the overview of services not only across the South-West but also nationally for each condition • We can easily identify the factors which help services be provided to a high standard • Can put you in touch with the relevant people in other areas

  9. Develop or refine care pathways Use our knowledge (latest research and best evidence) to help you look objectively at your current services and suggest improvements The Commissioning Support Service is an example of how this may develop further in the future

  10. Work in partnership You have a statutory responsibility to provide the best possible services within your resources + We want to ensure people with neurological conditions receive the best possible care = PARTNERSHIP
