  1. The Rise of Sumer(soo- muhr) Located in southern Mesopotamia NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THEY CAME FROM! ..but by 3000B.C. several hundred thousand Sumerians settled in Mesopotamia!

  2. Cities: • City- State: A central city and all the countryside around it . • City- States fought each other for more farmland. • They built armies • Built walls for protection

  3. Government: • Akkadians took over Sumer! • Created 1st ever empire • Emperor named Sargon (empire only lasted a century after he died) • Sumerians then took over and rebuilt citystate of Ur.

  4. Religion: • Religion played a role in every part of life! • Polytheism – worship of many gods • Each city-state had one god as a special protector • Believed gods could bring good or bad harvests, • Success depended on pleasing the gods. • * Priests made offerings to the gods in temple.

  5. Society: • Social Hierarchy – the division of society by rank or class. • In order of rank from most important/powerful: • Kings • Priests • Skilled craftspeople/ merchants • Farmers/ laborers • Slaves (free after 3 years)

  6. Society continued: • Men – held political power - made laws - educated • Women – took care of house and children - some wealthy women were educated - some priestesses
