  1. Matter-Mixtures and their Separation Grade 5 Week 3

  2. What are mixtures? • When substances are combined without chemically reacting, mixtures are formed. • In a mixture, each component or part retains its own original properties.

  3. Solutions are mixtures. Lemonade is a mixture. Coffee is a solution. In a solution, you observe only one single phase (solid or liquid or gas).

  4. In a mixture, substances do not react chemically, thus they can be separated more easily by physical means. Pure water Evaporate water out! salt

  5. Other examples… Since iron is magnetic, passing a magnet over the mixture will pull the magnet out! Filtration can be used to filter particles out of dirty water.

  6. A mixture problem The recent oil spill in the Gulf has been a challenge for scientists. How do we separate the oil from the water in an effective way? Here a clean up crew up scoops up oil from the beach….

  7. The difference between a mixture and a compound: Example: pure H2O Example: candy mixture Compounds cannot be as easily separated as substances have chemically combined! Mixtures can easily be separated by physical means….
