  2. Contents • Brief Introduction to Dyscalculia • The Situation • Objectives • Comments from Prelims • Timeline • Methodology • Resources • The Website • Features • Pictures • Youtube Videos

  3. Dyscalculia – What it is • A mathematical disorder • “Number Blindness” • Closely related to Dyslexia • Counting Delays • Unable to understand basic Math Concepts • E.g 3+3=6 • Excels in other areas (unlike Dyslexia) • E.g Languages, Art • Short Term Memory • Sequence of Events (Can’t recall)

  4. Situation • “According to UK studies done by Gross-Tsur, Manor and Shalev in 1996, 6.5% are dyscalculic. According to studies done by Lewis, Hitch and Walker in 1994, 1.3% are dyscalculic while 2.3% are dyscalculic AND dyslexic - that means that according to this study 3.6% of the World's population are dyscalculic.” – Dyscalculia Forum • Singapore a fast paced country • Parents very “kiasu” • Some kids don’t do well • Not their fault • Parents fail to see child’s medical problems

  5. Objectives • Raise awareness about Dyscalculia • Through the use of: • Online resources (YouTube Videos, Website) • Offline resources (Brochures) • Help Singaporean parents who are oblivious to the condition • Make recommendations to parents, inform them about such a disability • Let them view our website for background knowledge, before going to see a pediatrician.

  6. Comments from Prelims Q: “Looking back at your Diagnosis... Yeah, so to determine if a person has this disability you need to consult a specialist/professional on this, so have you found a specialist? Because if you have not, I think you really need to do so soon. This is a rather important factor.” What we have done: We have emailed the Dyslexia Association of Singapore 2 times, - 14th May - 17th June There was no response. 10th July? Call

  7. Comments from Prelims Q: “Why do you think that it is important to create awareness on Dyscalculia? You showed that many people do not know of it. But why do you think people need to know about this? Because not knowing and needing to know are two totally different things.” Why there is a need to raise awareness; • Singapore is a very fast-paced country • “Keep up or die” • Protect innocent childrenfrom getting blamed • Some 5% of the population suffers from Dyscalculia
