  1. Getting the right curtains for your home is not always as easy as just going out and buying a color you like! There are a number of factors to consider, do you need them to block out the light, do they need to let in a breeze or keep a room warm, what material do you want or need, as well as what style of curtain and design and color. Kitchen curtains can be a large part of how the room looks and how it feels. Here is an overview of some things to consider when you are looking for curtains for your kitchen.

  2. Deciding on style - Drapes or curtains come in a far larger range of shapes, styles and sized than many people realize! Full length, pooled, cafe, short, cover most of the sizes. Then you can get lacy curtains, heavy blackout ones, folded pleat curtains, voile, valances and more. When you are looking through the choices think about which style and shape suit your style of kitchen. Busy walls might mean plainer curtains, and then, on the other hand, neutral walls might mean patterned curtains. Since kitchen windows often sit over a counter or sink you are likely going to want a shorter styled curtain.

  3. Curtain cleaning - Before you head out to buy something a practical consideration many do not think of is how they will need to be cleaned. Curtains will get dusty and dirty, the odors from the kitchen will get into them. In general, all kitchen curtains need to be hand washed but especially if they are made from a more fragile material. Take off metallic hooks and such, soak them in water that has detergent dissolved in it. If you do choose to put them in a washing machine make sure the fabric is strong enough to handle the spin cycle. When in doubt though send them to a dry cleaner!

  4. Be sure to measure correctly - Usually, kitchen curtains are about the length of the window or they are short, coming halfway down or even just a quarter. When you know which length you want to be sure to measure carefully and double check your numbers. You will need both measurements, the length and the width. You will also want to make sure so they do not get stuck in condensation, that they hang away from the window some.

  5. Buying your kitchen curtains - Once the decisions have been made about style, color, size and material you are ready to go buy what you need. If you are going to an actual store make sure you take those measurements with you. Some places have ready made curtains for you to choose from, but there are also places where you can choose a material and have them made for you. An alternative to going out is to look online. There are a lot of great options on the internet, you can browse through the kitchen curtains, Cafe curtains or Short curtains from the comfort of your own home and some offer great shipping deals or even free shipping.
