Size and Location of our Community How big is our community? • Tobique First Nation is the oldest and largest of the Maliseet Nations. • Tobique is the second largest on reserve Aboriginal community in New Brunswick. • Our community has doubled in size over the past 15 years. • Our land area covers about 24.92 square km. • Tobique First Nation is located in a rural area in north western New Brunswick. • We live next to the town of Perth-Andover, NB. This is where we do most of our grocery shopping. • We live in a wooded area and with lots of water nearby. We have two rivers near our community, the Tobique River and the St. John River.

  4. Population of our Community How many people live in our community? • There are about 2,000 people living in our community. • Most of the people living in our community are under the age of 25 years old. That means there are a lot of children living in our community.

  5. Culture and Language • In our community the official culture and language is Maliseet. • Even though the official language is Maliseet most people speak English. • French and Micmac are also spoken by some of our community members. • We do have a Maliseet Immersion program at our school. • The Maliseet Immersion program just started this year and it promotes the teaching of our official language Maliseet to four year olds.

  7. Buildings in our Community • We have a lot of buildings within our own community, they include the following: • Mah-Sos School • Complex/Youth Center • Wellness Center • Bodin’s Craft Store • Tobique Tobacco • Fire hall • Ambulance Bay • Doctor’s Office • Church • Smoke Shop • Gas Bar

  10. Activities in our Community What kind of things are there to do in our Community? Activities for everyone: • Powwows • Indian dancing • Chanting • Drumming • Smudging • Horse Rides • Sweat Lodges • Making crafts • Fitness Room • Swimming Pool

  11. Activities Cont… Youth Center Activities: • Day camp during the summertime • Arts and Crafts • Nature Walks • Day trips to surrounding areas • Bowling • Movies • Swimming at the pool or beach • Sports: basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, winter ball, ball hockey, water aerobics, etc…

Activities Cont… Labour Day Activities: In our community we like to celebrate Labour Day with a variety of activities: • Parades • Craft and Food Booths • Fireworks • Amusement Park rides • Jumping Castles • Several Games: canoe racing, three-legged races, potato sack races, etc… • Little Miss Tobique Pageant / Little Brave Pageant • Dances • Three-on-three Basketball games • Baseball tournaments
