  2. PURPOSE OF THIS MEETING • Review information useful to you as your son/daughter moves into their freshman year and beyond… • Answer questions you may have in regard to your son/daughter’s secondary & post-secondary education… • Discuss role of the School Counselor…

  5. General Description of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program Purpose of the Counseling Program is to empower ALL students, regardless of individual differences, to acquire the academic, career, and personal/social foundations necessary to positively contribute to a changing society.

General Description of School Counseling Program • Counselors will meet with all students at least once a year as part of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program. • FR, SOPH, & JR Career Units. • Testing Program • Juniors: College, Tech College, or Opportunity Seminar • Financial Aid Meeting and much more…

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE • Registration forms will be handed out to the incoming Freshman students at St. Paul’s and St. Joseph’s on 02/08/10, and at JLMS on 02/09/10 • Registration forms will be collected at St. Joseph’s & St. Paul’s on 02/15/10 and at JLMS on 02/16/10 . • Check prerequisites for courses selected • Please make sure you as parent/guardian sign registration form. • Special Education registration at JLMS will be on 02/11/10.

  11. REGISTRATION FORM • Courses that are required for graduation • Recommended courses in relation to what your son/daughter has in mind for life after high school… (two or four year college? Technical College? Employment?) • Make sure that your son/daughter pursues “the most rigorous curriculum with which they are comfortable, keeping in mind their future post-secondary goals.”

  28. COLLEGE PLANNING Entrance Requirements • Class Rank • College Core Credits • ACT/SAT Scores (Most schools use these as their primary criteria for selection. However, additional items such as extra-curricular activities, community service, interviews, leadership, etc… may be considered.)

University of Wisconsin SystemFreshman Admission Policy • Minimum of 17 specific high school credits • 13 of 17 credits required by UW System: • English: 4 credits • Social Studies: 3 credits • Mathematics: 3 credits • Natural Science: 3 Credits • Remaining 4 credits: • 2 credits from above areas or world language • Remaining 2 credits from above areas and/or fine arts, computer science, and other academic areas.

World Language ?’s • UW System schools with requirements… • UW-Madison requires 2 years but recommends 4 • UW-Eau Claire requires 2 but recommends more • UW-La Crosse typical freshman has 3 years • UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, & UW-Parkside require 2 years in H.S. or 1 year in college to receive their diploma • Marquette requires 2 years • Things to think about in terms of deciding whether your student should continue in world language...
