2. Hockey • We will be beginning our unit on the game of Hockey. • To play, you must learn about he game, its history, and how it is played. • After this short lesson, you will be an expert on the game and we can begin to develop our skills to become future all-stars.

3. What is Hockey? • Hockey is a sport played on ice, inline rollerblades, or on foot in which two teams compete against each other, using a stick to try and hit a puck or ball into a goal.

5. History • Hockey is evolved from field hockey style games in Europe. • Developed in Canada by British soldiers and immigrants. • Adapted Field Hockey to be played in icy Canadian conditions.

6. History • 1873-The first organized Hockey game was developed. • 1902- The first professional hockey league was formed in Pennsylvania as the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League.

7. History • The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed out of the National Hockey Association form Canada in 1917. • The NHL then expanded into the United States.

8. History • Since 1917, the NHL has become the most successful and most popular Hockey league in the world. • 30 teams and over 690 players from around the world.

9. Original1800’s 2010 History • Lord Stanley’s Cup has been the championship trophy in the NHL since the 1800s. • Lord Stanley was practically the founder of organized hockey and his cup was/is a national treasure in Canada.

Rules and Regulations • Every Professional Hockey game is played by the same set of rules. • The rules can and do change year to year along with the progression and evolution of the game. • Almost every level under the professional level has slightly different rules, though all are developed and approved by USA Hockey

12. Rules and Regulations • Points are accumulated by putting the puck into the opponent’s net. • The team the scores the most goals in the 3 periods wins the game. • Period times vary between leagues and age levels.

Rules and Regulations • As the game evolves, so does the equipment. • From simply wearing warm clothes, to completely equipping players with pad from head to toe, including goaltenders. • Along with the padding, sticks have also evolved from chunks of wood to scientifically molded composite materials with curved blades to improve control.

14. Rules and Regulations • Body checking makes Ice Hockey one of the fastest and most physical sports. • Body checking is only allowed in PeeWee (ages 10-12) and up. • Roller Hockey and Street Hockey do not allow body checking.

15. Rules and Regulations • The hockey stick is only used to manuver the puck and to separate the opponent’s stick from the puck. • Any contact with a stick and the opponent’s body is a variety of penalties. • Hooking, slashing, high stick, etc.

Rules and Regulations • Any player who takes their hands off the stick and place their hands on another player or an opponent's stick is also a penalty. • These offenses are often Roughing, Holding, Unsportsmanlike. • In leagues above high school, excluding college, fighting is often aloud, with certain regulations and penalties.

Rules and Regulations • Fighting, ironically has several involved. • Only two players may be involved in a fight. • No gloves and no sticks involved. • Five minute penalties for the players who fight. • Extra penalties for Instigation can be handed out if one person fights another without the other clearly engaging from the start of the fight. • It is considered to be respectful for fighters to take off any face shield before a fight.

19. Positions • The game of hockey is played with six players. • 3 Forwards • 2 Defensemen • 1 Goaltender

Positions • Forwards • Primary role is to press the offense and score goals. • Also help out in the defensive zone. • Center • Takes faceoffs which are battles for the puck with the opposing center at the start of every play. • Are often the only offensive players that play defense by their own goal. • Right and Left Wingers • Work with the center in maintaining control of the puck and scoring goals.

21. Positions • Defense • Primary objective is to prevent the opponent’s offense from shooting the puck at the goal. • Often the most physical players on the rink. • Also join in the offensive plays.

22. Positions • Goaltender • The last defense against the opponent scoring. • Protects the net from being entered by the puck. • Extra protective padding to protect against direct shots. The most important position

Lets Go Play! • Now that you know about the game of hockey, lets learn how we will be playing in class. • In class we do not have the same level of padding as they have in a regular league. • There will be no sticks raised above the waist and no pucks lifted above the waist. • No body checking will be allowed.

24. Lets Go Play! • If a penalty infraction occurs, the person who the penalty is committed against will be awarded a penalty shot. • The player starts at the center line, approaches the opposing goal and gets one free attempt to score against the goaltender.

25. Lets Go Play! • We will divide you up into two teams and set up a tournament. • Every team will play at least six games during this tournament. • After the six games every team will have a chance in the playoffs to win our Championship Cup that we will design and name in the coming days.
