  2. Polygamy Polygamy is the state of having multiple wives. Polygamy was common in Nigeria. Men would take care of large amounts of children from many wives. Polygamy has been a traditional practice in Nigeria long before the colonialist and the missionaries came in.

  3. Ikwu Aka (Knocking) • Marriage in Igboland is not just an affair between the future husband and wife but also involves the parents, the extended family and villages. • The intending groom must (with their father) go to see the bride's father to formally introduce himself and his proposal. • For this proposal he will not need to bring a gift.

  4. Continuation. • The groom will return for another visit and will ask for the answer for his proposal. • In this encounter he will include gifts to the host family such as Kola nuts, Wines (alcoholic/non-alcoholic) and wrappers (Nigerian/Holland prints).

  5. Continuation.

  6. Igba Nwku (Engagement) • At this stage a date has been set for the groom to ask the bride to be his wife. • It is normally held at the brides home. • The groom will have to bring several gifts when he proposes. • These gifts could be anything from food or jewelry or wine.

  7. Wedding Day • Depending upon the local custom, the bride's elders may help her to bathe and prepare for the wedding. • The bride usually wears imported Indian fabrics as well as a decorative coral-beaded headpiece, ankle bracelets and necklaces. • After the ceremony, there is a party that frequently lasts late into the night. • After the party, the bride returns to her father's home to change out of her wedding attire. Her new husband arrives with his family to claim his bride and the couple departs to begin their new life together.
