Propaganda of World War II Mr. Early 5th Grade Elizabeth Scott Elementary School
What Is Propaganda? • Media used to influence opinion, in order to get a population ready for war • What type of writing could we compare to propaganda?
Different Types of Media • Visual • posters, postcards • Audio • radio commercials, music • Audiovisual • movies, cartoons
Propaganda in WWII • When World War II started, some nations were ready for war and some were not. All nations had to use propaganda in order to get their citizens ready for war.
Responding to WW II Propaganda • Each piece of media is an example of propaganda from WWII. • As you view and listen, answer these questions: • What country is it from? • How do you know? Explain your thinking. • What was the creator trying to say (theme)? • Who is it meant for (audience)?
Audio Example • http://youtu.be/6hLnj4IFBHY
When The Lights Go On Again When the lights go on again all over the worldAnd the boys are home again all over the worldAnd rain or snow is all that may fall from the skies aboveA kiss won't mean "goodbye" but "Hello to love"When the lights go on again all over the worldAnd the ships will sail again all over the worldThen we'll have time for things like wedding rings and free hearts will singWhen the lights go on again all over the world
Your Turn • As you observe each example of WWII propaganda, respond to the questions on your student worksheet. • After everyone has had time to respond, we will “buzz” with our table groups about our thinking.

Propaganda in WWII • Germany, Japan, and the United States all used different themes of propaganda, but which was the best?
Your Task • Your group will be analyzing propaganda posters from three of the main participants in World War II: Germany, Japan, and the United States. While analyzing you will be searching for different themes in each of these posters. • Your group will be creating your own World War II propaganda poster from one of the three nations. When creating your poster, be sure to use the themes from the country you have selected.
