  1. AMCMS Service Project Mark Pederoza, Kim Giesenschlag, Travis Jack October 27, 2008

  2. Our Service Project • As a group, we spent an afternoon with the Autistic Unit at A&M Consolidated Middle School and provided them with a pizza party and pumpkin carving activity • We chose this service project because AMCMS had just started a new program that gave students with Autism and average students an opportunity to interact with one another and we wanted to be part of that experience

  3. Service Project Preparation • We spent ~2-3 hrs. brainstorming for an idea, talking with teachers and each other, organizing everything, and getting all needed materials to the school • That afternoon we had 8 pizzas (provided by Hungry Howie’s) and 5 liters of soda (provided by the school) donated for the students to have a snack after school and mingle together • 7 pumpkins were also donated for the students to carve as groups for Halloween by HEB • We bought pumpkin carving kits and candy for the students to enjoy (which cost ~$15)

  4. Starting Off • As the students were eating pizza and mingling with each other we carved out the tops of the pumpkins for the students so they could begin cleaning them out as soon as they were through eating

  5. Cleaning Out the Pumpkin • We then went around and helped each group clean out the pumpkin goo and seeds from their pumpkins

  6. CARVING PUMPKINS!!!

  7. Our Service Project • We believe that each student who participated in the activity that day benefited greatly. We had an outstanding attendance of about 30 students and teachers! After talking with the students that day, we could really tell that the activity and time they spent together was very positive and many students said they were coming back next month. Also, teachers from the Autistic Unit assured us that our afternoon was a success and the students had a good time. • We also feel that we benefited greatly from this project, because it gave us sight into working with students with Autism.
