  1. Various Treatment Options For Varicose Veins Besides conservative treatments for varicose veins like the use of topical steroids, antibiotic treatment, drugs that favor normal venous flow, one can also opt for invasive procedures such as endovenous laser ablation to get relief from varicose vein symptoms. A frequently used treatment is the sclerotherapy, useful especially when there is no advance disease. This treatment involves the insertion of a needle in the diseased vein and injection of a chemical irritant, which collapses the vein. It requires several sessions, therefore the final results will be achieved in several months, not immediate, but with a definitive treatment as well.

  2. Sclerotherapy can also be ultrasound guided, allowing the treatment to see the veins that are not superficial. Compression stockings are also indicated after the procedure and patients are encouraged to work and walk the following day after the procedure. Another procedure is phlebectomy; this is a surgical intervention for patients with tortuous veins and impossibility for the advancement of the catheter. The procedure is done with the help of a small scalpel to remove varicose veins that are just beneath the surface of legs. It should be done along with other procedures, especially when the great saphenous vein is compromised.

  3. Other Treatment Procedures: You need to inform your doctor of your recent illness, medical conditions and medications that you are taking before the procedure. Other procedures exist such as endovascular interventions, surgical bypass and valves reconstructions but these are not the first line of treatment and should be considered in very advance diseases with no response to other available therapeutic options and with a visit to the vascular surgeon who is specialist on this very advance procedures. Always remember that even if your treatment of choice is one of the invasive procedures, it should always come along with conservative treatment and all patients should be encouraged to make the life style modifications and use compression stockings before and after the procedure in order to prevent the recurrence of the disease. See the before and after treatment gallery.

  4. What are the possible complications? The most common complication when there is an advance disease is the ulcers formation, most frequently located in the medial portion of the calf, which requires a timely and adequate treatment due to the high risk of infection associated and prevention of systemic, possibly deathly, infections. Secondly, dilation of the veins can predispose to blood clot formation and produce thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Thirdly, if the compromised vein is superficial, it may become an open wound and can be associated with some bleeding. Patients can also present dermatitis and very severe pain.

  5. Non-surgical procedures to treat varicose veins Varicose veins should not be treated merely as cosmetic issue. If ignored, these may cause leg ulcers, skin discoloration, swelling, reduce mobility and lower the quality of life for the affected individual. Non-surgical procedures such as EVLT and Sclerotherapy allow you to restore the beauty of your legs. In EVLT procedure, small bursts of energy are delivered to the affected vein through a catheter to close it shut. The laser is pulled along the length of the vein, guided through an ultrasound scan to close the entire length of the vein. Sclerotherapy is suitable for the people with small to medium sized varicose veins. The treatment involves injecting a chemical into the varicose vein that scars it and seals it closed.
