Technology as media, “audiovisual movement” Technical skills to keep networks running Use of technology to promote learning Education about technology, vocational training, information delivery systems

  3. For Our Purposes … Technology in Education: Seamless use of technology tools into a purposeful, participatory learning environment • Good Example or Bad Example? • Using the Internet to research projects • Letting students play educational games if they finish their work early.

  4. Technology solves an existing problem of access. • Technology removes barriers that may exist for some students. One framework for looking at these issues: UDL

Universal Design for Learning: Architectural Perspective • the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design • Modifications made for some help all: • Curb cuts • Elevators • Television captioning • Touch screens • Graphic organizers • Multimedia • Can you think of other examples?

Rationale: Universal Design for Learning • Achieves this goal by providing three kinds of flexibility: • Presenting content in multiple formats and media. • providing multiple ways for students to express what they know. • providing multiple ways to engage students’ interest and motivation. What are some examples you can think of related to your content area?

Rationale: Universal Design for Learning • UDL is a framework for designing educational goals, methods, materials, and assessments and provides a rationale for technology integration. • Goal: To provide rich supports for learning and reducing barriers to curriculum while maintaining high achievements standards for all students.

Examples of Rationale related to UDL UDL concept: Multiple options for representing information UDL concept: Multiple options for engaging learners Technology: Using digital images to show examples of fractions (i.e. ½ a pizza).Rationale: Visual examples clarify concepts. Technology: Creating a podcast in collaborative learning groups about global warming.Rationale: Active participation is motivating for students. Technology: having students create a public service announcement related to energy conservation rather than write a reportRationale: Students who aren’t strong writers but know the material can tell you what they know. UDL concept: Multiple options for expressing knowlege
