  2. What happens when we don’t get the whole picture?

  3. How can we get the full picture in our essays? Context: the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc.

  4. That’s great Mr. Young, but how can I do this in my essay? Context in my essay is when you state who is saying the quote to whom, when in the story, and where.

  5. Practice Locate the following scene: O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! Now in one or two sentences explain who is talking to whom, as well as when and where in the story that this quote takes place.

  6. Example: In 1.5, Romeo speaks these words, in the form of an aside, as he views Juliet from afar for the first time at the Capulet masquerade.

  8. Analysis in literature In as many sentences as it takes: State what the quote literally says. And 2) Analyze the quote in relation to your topic

  9. Practice Our topic here is to critique Romeo as a true lover. What does this quote literally say? How does this quote show Romeo’s character development? Does it relate it to earlier moments in the play? If relevant, can you connect it other moments in our literature?

  10. Example: 1) Romeo is equating Juliet’s beauty to the stars in the sky. Moreover, she is muse for the stars nightly twinkling. From his perspective, Juliet’s fairness is untouchable. & 2) This quote demonstrates the youthful impulsiveness of Romeo. Just before this moment, Romeo’s heart was devoted to the unobtainable Rosaline. Juliet is the antidote to Romeo’s lovesickness as he quickly forgets all his woes in this love at first sight moment. This forces the audience to see Romeo more as a boy infatuated with a girl instead of a man in love with a woman.

  11. Putting it all together! Context: In 1.5, Romeo speaks these words, in the form of an aside, as he views Juliet from afar for the first time at the Capulet masquerade. Quote: “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! / It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear; / Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!” (1.5.44-48). Analysis: This quote demonstrates the youthful impulsiveness of Romeo. Just before this moment, Romeo’s heart was devoted to the unobtainable Rosaline. Juliet is the antidote to Romeo’s lovesickness as he quickly forgets all his woes in this love at first sight moment.
