  1. Chapter 1 CHM 130 at GCC

  2. Long ago (400 BC) the Greeks thought everything was made of these 4 “elements.” What were they? Earth, wind, fire, water.

  3. Years later (800 AD) alchemists tried to turn lead into what? Gold

  4. Introduction to Chemistry Considered the central science. Biology Physics Chemistry Medicine Geology

  5. Why study Chemistry? *

  6. Name ways chemistry impacts your life! • Drugs, medicines • Recycling • Plastics • Cell phones • Alarm clocks • Alcohol • Ink • And it is endless • Batteries • Electricity • Clean water • Energy • Nuclear bombs • TNT, fire • Shampoo, makeup • Computers

  7. Chemistry plays an essential role in everyday life & Chemistry 130 is the foundation of the world of Chemistry ! ABC's of Chemistry

  8. 1.1 The Scientific Method: • Make an Observation • My boyfriend stinks • Formulate Hypothesis • He stinks if he does not bathe • Perform Experiments Scrub him in the bath with lava soap then smell • Refine the hypothesis and repeat experiments as needed. Other scientists should be able to repeat the experiment and get the same results.

  9. Good Observations • Making good observations in lab include: • Color (no color is colorless NOT clear) • Clarity (clear or opaque) • State of matter (solid, liquid, gas)

  10. What is the difference between a theory and a law ? A theory is an explanation of behavior A law is a measurable fact. Gravity is a law Protons are a theory Ask yourself – Is it measurable? YES Law NO Theory

  11. 1.2 Branches of Chemistry • Biochemistry • Analytical chemistry • Inorganic chemistry • Organic chemistry • Physical chemistry • Environmental (green) chemistry Your chemistry professor probably specialized in one area. Chemists are not experts in all areas, that would be impossible. There is sooooo much to learn in chemistry, everyone can find something they like!!! Really!!! I swear!!!

  12. You try Self-Test p. 11 • Numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 • Answers in Appendix J
