Friday 4/25/2014 Agenda: Objectives: Content Objectives Students will be able to… Per. 2: increase their understanding of empathy Per. 4: plan/write an expository essay Per. 5: analyze the speech “The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes” Language Objective Per. 2/4: Students will… Per. 2: Students will showing empathy Per. 4: write an expository essay in class Per. 5: Students will complete a collaborative poster comparing/contrasting 2 speeches • Bell Work Week 30 • Period 2: Finish Empathy Unit activities • Period 4: Write an informative (expository) essay in class on the speech “The Girl Who Silenced the World for Five Minutes” • Period 5: Begin collaborative posters • H/W: Per. 2: “Walk in Their Shoes” activity (due Monday)

Next: Per. 4 • Bell Work: • Create a list of persuasive techniques that you’ve learned about in this unit • You may use any of the handouts from this unit as a way to review the techniques. • Discuss your ideas with your group and come up with a list… each group member has his/her own sheet of paper with the list.

  4. Next: Per. 4 • Find a sheet of notebook paper and Handouts # 2 & 3

  5. Next: Per. 4 • Using Handout #3 (Speech Analysis), you will construct an informative essay. • You need to address the following: • Question #1 can be combined with question #2 (as 2 supports 1) • Question #3 • Question #4 • Question #5 • On the back: • Question #1 (appeal) & question #3 (modality)

  6. Per. 4 Your Expository Essay: • Include: • An introduction and conclusion • 4-6 Body Paragraphs • Use Handout #3 as your plan/guide

  7. Per. 2: Homework • Remember that your “Walk in Their Shoes” homework is due on Monday. Get an adult to sign your paper.

  8. Next: • Find your Handout from yesterday (Seeking Perspectives)

  9. Next: Per. 4 • One person from each group, go get your poster from the table at the back of the room. • Please do not misplace other people’s work in your search for your own. • You will have some time to finish your poster then we’ll display them and do a gallery walk with a rubric.

  10. Next: Per. 5 • Find your Handout #3 (Speech Analysis). • You will work with the other members of your group to create a collaborative poster using Handout #3.

  11. Exit procedures: • Pick up any pieces of paper left on the floor (even if you didn’t create the mess) • Stack the Academic Language Scripts in the center of your table • Ensure that textbooks are secured underneath desks with wire racks or on top of desks without racks • Ensure that you’ve retrieved all of your belongings
