  4. www.jazzednet.org The Jazz Education Network (JEN) is a global non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in the United States of America that seeks to advance jazz education, promote performance and develop new audiences. JEN was founded in 2008 in Chicago and now has over 1,500 members in 23 countries, every USA state and 7 Canadian provinces. The Jazz Education Network is dedicated to building the jazz arts community by advancing education, promoting performance, and developing new audiences.

  5. JEN Research Interest Group (JENRing) To provide a platform and network for jazz research and its applications to pedagogy and the art form

  6. The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation-JEN Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian The EFCF/JEN Jazz Research provides opportunities for a serious educator/student/music historian (such as senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students) to conduct a research project associated with the archival collections at the Smithsonian Institution. The project will be allowed up to two years to final completion or the fellowship money must be refunded. In addition, a final presentation of the project will take place at the Smithsonian Institution as well as at the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference. A written document/summation (non-exclusively) published through JEN is also required. The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation is prepared to make a grant between one thousand and five thousand dollars, and an additional thousand dollars may be awarded towards travel and accommodations if the Foundation deems this necessary. Grant proposals must include a research proposal that outlines the project, the relationship and benefit to specific jazz research areas, how the resources of the Smithsonian Institution will be used, and a proposed timeline (grant request not to exceed 1500 words), a list of collaborators, curriculum vitae, a letter of reference by the Department Chair or an expert in the field, and a detailed budget. Submissions must be completed online at www.JazzEdNet.org and are due annually by March 31. Grant awardees will be notified by May 1.

  7. 2015 Convention • 28 research presentations throughout the 2014 conference ranging from historical and theoretical analysis to pedagogical tools and jazz advocacy, selected from 51 application • 15 poster presentations Friday 2-4pm with 8 posters only (no additional conference presentation) • Research Committee Meeting Friday 1pm • Dedicated Sessions: Grant Resources (Smithsonian, Chamber Music America), Best Practices, JAI Results and Next Steps

  8. 1. Mapping the Field  Goals: - position JEN as an umbrella organization in the field to facilitate grant support, initiate new directions, and facilitate dissemination of information • create a central database that functions as a clearinghouse of information and resources available • formulate some of the central questions:  Why should we care about jazz and jazz research? • leveraging the jazz community in a crowdsourcing model towards gathering and refining some of the important research questions

  9. 2. JEN Research Track 2016 • a themed track for the 2016 conference that calls for presentations in support of mapping and networking the field and setting goals for the future • submit selected papers to the Journal of Jazz Research for peer review to be published in a themed edition after the conference • present the first JEN Smithsonian Research fellow • present a 'Best Practices' and 'Resources' session based on our current discussions • have a general callout meeting towards more participation

  10. 3. Jazz Research Committee and Jazz Audience Initiative In August 2011, the Jazz Arts Group in Columbus released the findings of a two-year national market study for jazz called the Jazz Audiences Initiative (JAI). JEN announces that it is now the primary repository for JAI data and will work to further this research and facilitate further discussions on this topic.
