Background Taught at Whatcom since 95 AAS from Tyler Junior College-worked as a lab tech for 3 years BS from University of Texas at Tyler- undergrad research with snakes MS from Miami University- research on activity patterns in salamanders Ph.D. Univ. of Louisiana, Lafayette- predator prey relationships

  4. Materials • Text- Black Microbiology: Principles and explorations • Notes, study guides syllabi policies available on my faculty website- access from college website • Lab Manual- Lancaster and Bennett • Protective clothing for lab, closed toed shoes

  6. Attendance • Bonus points for two or fewer absences • Grade is often related to attendance • If you miss lecture, it is your responsibility to catch up • Labs should not be missed unless absolutely necessary

  7. Academic dishonesty • No cheating • No plagiarism

Professional behavior • Respect for others- • If you are late or leave early, do it quietly • Turn off cell phones please • Listen to classmates during presentations • Do not put excess work on lab partner • If you are not satisfied with a grade after a brief discussion in class, then see me during office hours • Do not disrupt classmates during lecture

  11. Exams • Three “regular exams” – the lowest grade is dropped • Final is partially comprehensive and cannot be dropped • Makeups are all essay • You have to call before the exam • You have to take it within 2 business days • You have the option of dropping it

  12. Exam Format 24 Multiple Choice 13 Matching 13 T/F 15 Fill in the bland 70 points of short answer/essay (5-10 pts. Each) @ 12-14 questions The final will be partially comprehensive

  13. Exam Dates • Exam 1 – 6 Oct. • Exam 2 – 27 Oct. • Exam 3 – 17 Nov. • Final – 8 Dec.

  14. Lab • Always come to lab prepared to do the work for safety, efficiency, and fairness to your lab partner • We will work with pathogenic microbes and dangerous chemicals so aseptic technique is required • No eating or drinking in lab • Always clean up and dispose of materials properly

Written assignmentsTo be turned into me or brought to my office • Global climate change and microbiology paper- Draft 30 Apr., Final due 7 May • Formal laboratory reports • Unknown #1- Draft 10 Nov., Final due 19 Nov. • Unknown #2- Draft Nov. 23, Final 3 Dec. • Lab summaries- due the week after completion • Extra credit - 23 Nov.
