Strategies for Success • How can students increase their appreciation for reading? • What skills, strategies and concepts must students master to be more critical, analytical readers? • How can students improve their writing skills while considering the various audiences they may write for? • How can students prepare for tests like the Keystones and SATs more efficiently? • How can students improve their vocabulary?

Homework, Assessments and Clinic - Record assignments in Student Handbook immediately after warm up assignment - Homework reinforced in class and on website - Please encourage your kids to use clinic as a resource - Nightly review recommended - Absent? Writing - Emphasis on Process and Product - 5 paragraph essays narrative, expository, persuasive - I-Search (Marking Period 2) - Grading of major writings based on Pennsylvania Writing Assessment Scoring Guidelines "I may have said the same thing before... Research Paper - Question based research • “Can I manage my asthma effectively without medication?” • “Who are the most influential directors of the last decade?” • “Is filtered water actually better for you than tap water?” • “Does the Loch Ness monster actually exist?” • “Is carpentry the right career for me?” - Completed second marking period- 25% of marking period grade - Uses I-Search paper format and follows MLA format - Plagiarism results may result in failure for assignment as per student handbook policy, discipline referral required "An educational system isn't worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living but doesn't teach them how to make a life." -- Unknown

Vocabulary Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop Level E • 20% each Marking Period • Twenty new words every other week: parts of speech, definitions, synonyms, antonyms and sentence completion • Rule of firsts and lasts • Tests- Biweekly and Cumulative • Website with games and iWords, vocabtest.com • Solid SAT performance enhanced by rich vocabulary background • Extra Credit flashcards 100/0 points • $12.00 to CRHS South Student Activities - English

Grammar / Usage / Mechanics - Taught formally using Holt – English Workshop. - Frequent practice – in context and testing formats - Addresses skills that improve writing style and clarity as well as problems seen in compositions - The SAT has a writing section containing multiple-choice grammar / usage / mechanics questions as well as an essay “Ignorant people think it is the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggravating, but it ain't so; it is the sickening grammar that they use.”  ~Mark Twain
