  1. Empires of Asia Geography, the Mogul Empire, and the Fall of that Empire

  2. Geography • Because of the size of the continent, Asia has many diverse types of geographical landforms • Snow covers part of the land year round while a tropical rainforest stands tall just South of it. • Mountains provide rivers with water as well as protection from invaders • Today, most Asians live in river or mountain valleys while some do live on the coasts

  3. The Mogul Empire (India) • The Gupta dynasty unified Northern India in 320 AD • Between 455-1500 different groups will invade • The Huns and Muslims conquered parts of India • In 1526, Babur took power in northern India • Marked the beginning of the Mogul Empire • Will conquer much of the area in his four year rule

  4. Babur’s son will succeed him, but his grandson, Akbar, will be known as the greatest Mogul emperor • Reigned from 1556-1605 • Will bring most of the Indian subcontinent under his rule • Will make his capital city at Agra • He had to win the loyalty of non-Muslim subjects

  5. He will reform and strengthen the central government by dividing it into levels. • Provinces, districts, and villages each had their own administration (government officials) • His tax system was revolutionary at the time—was equal to 1/3 of all crops produced • Aimed at Nobles and Farmers! (Never done before)

  6. From Rise to Fall • The Mogul emperors were Muslim ruling over Hindus • Although some Hindus did serve in the administration and the military as generals • Will become the richest and most powerful nation in the world (at the time) • Shah Jahan (Akbar’s grandson) was responsible for the construction of the TajMahal

  7. Shah Jahan’s son, Aurangzeb, took the throne, he was very harsh • Forced Hindus and other non-Muslims to pay a special tax • They blamed him for the destruction of many Hindu temples • Due to his unpopular policies, Western India rebelled with the South following their lead • The Empire soon crumbled • By the mid-1700s, Mogul control was limited to the area around the city of Delhi (northern India)
