  3. Close Election Kennedy Nixon 34,108,157 (49.5%) • 34,226,731 (49.7%) • Kennedy had a lot to prove to American people since he was not a clear winner

  4. Kennedy’s Military • Believed in a strong military, but less nuclear

  5. Kennedy’s Foreign Policy • Focused more on economic aid than military aid to countries • Especially focused on Latin America • Pushed for democracy here • Peace Corps: sending Americans to various developing countries to focus on improvement projects

  6. Cuba • Fidel Castro led takeover • Communist • Formed new alliance with Soviet Union

  7. Bay of Pigs • President Eisenhower and CIA had a secret mission • Trained Cuban exiles to invade Cuba • When Kennedy took office, 1500 attacked

  8. Cuba Wins • Attack failed; disastrous for U.S. as many were killed or captured • Kennedy admitted blame

  9. Berlin Wall • Soviet leader Khrushchev saw this as perfect opportunity to prove U.S. weakness • 1961, helped build wall splitting Germany in Berlin • East Germany was communist • Kennedy sent troops in his stance against communism, but they did not want a war against Soviet Union • Wall stayed up until 1989

  10. Cuban Missile Crisis • Soviets kept arming Cuba with missiles and other weapons • Soviets said they did not want another Bay of Pigs

  11. Kennedy Warning • Since Cuba is only 90 miles away from FL Keys, he warned Soviets to stop sending missiles to Cuba • Soviets said they would stop, but U.S. spy planes caught Soviets still supplying missiles

  12. Kennedy Responds • Went on national T.V. • Warned Soviets the U.S. would fight if missiles were still being supplied to Cuba • Ordered Naval blockade surrounding Cuba to stop missiles from being shipped

  13. Kennedy Wins • After a tense standoff, the Soviets backed down • Kennedy was praised • Also made up for his Bay of Pigs disaster • U.S. and Soviets signed a limited nuclear ban
