  1. 15th October 2013 National Genomic Education Programme Presentation to the HEE DEQs Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for England

  2. Background “Genomics is the application of specific technologies to analyse genetic information about the entire genome. greater ability to determine disease and risk and predisposition more accurate diagnosis select and prioritise treatment every branch of medicine Moving ‘from bench to bedside’ and, as it does so, the potential for NHS-wide adoption and diffusion of genomic technology is becoming increasingly clear.“

  3. Genomics in practice

  4. The government has announced plans to sequence the full genomes of up to 100,000 NHS patients over the next 3-5 years The initiative - led now by Genomics England - is aimed particularly towards cancer; rare inherited diseases and infectious diseases 10 December 2012 6.2 Training Staff to work in the 21stCentury NHS 6.2.8. HEE will work with partners to develop a strategy for training and continuous professional development in genomics and genomic technology

  5. HEE arrangements for genomics education and training • Professor Ian Cumming SRO and Professor Nicki Latham Deputy SRO • High level strategic advisory board with first meeting on 8th November where overall work programme will be agreed • HEWM leading on supporting the overall programme and its implementation • Professor Sue Hill CSO overseeing the education and training resource development working in conjunction with the National School for Healthcare Science (Val Davison and Angela Daly) • National Genetics Education and Development Centre (funded by DH) integral part • Close links with public health genomics for development of infectious diseases resources

  6. Genomics education current position • HEIs have been teaching and researching bioinformatics and genomics • there is little clinically relevant, specialty specific genomic education curricula and teaching resources • Review of over 140 healthcare professional, medical and scientist curricula found very limited evidence of core genomic knowledge and clinical and scientific application of genomics • Very few CPD resources

  7. Work in progress • Scientists Training Programme Genetics and Clinical Bioinformatics (MSC) • Integration of genomic education into all scientist training programmes at all staff levels (practitioner – consultant ) • Healthcare professional curricula review undertaken • Gap analysis being identified to guide resource development and CPD requirements • Education and training resource framework being developed to house educational modules levelled to EQF • E-learning introductions being finalised, approx. EQF level 4; “Factual and theoretical knowledge in broad contexts within a field of work or study” • Educational roadmap for integration of new knowledge for staff working in infectious diseases being developed • Short DVD on role of genomics in clinical practice being scoped • Genomics education working and curricula review groups being established

  8. We need your help • If you are interested in being working with us • If you have any locally developed genomic education resources • If you have readily available education and training material in genomics • Please contact us or send them to: • angela.daly@wm.hee.nhs.uk
