  1. The Metric System (Day 3)(Kilo… to milli… units) We are learning to…convert metric units of length, mass, and volume. Wednesday, March 12, 2014

  2. What is the Metric System? • System of measurements that is based on increments of 10. • Why should I learn about the Metric System of Measurement? • Much easier to convert measurements compared to the English System of Measurement • Over 95% of the world uses the metric system. • In fact only 3 countries still use the English System of Measurement • Myanmar • Liberia • The United States

  3. The basic units of the Metric System: • A METER is the basic unit of length in the Metric System. • A GRAM is the basic unit of weight and mass in the Metric System • Think of the weight of a gram to be about 1 paper clip. • A LITER is the basic unit of volume in the Metric System.

  4. There are also units of the Metric System which are smaller than the basic units. Moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit you must divide because you must see how many groups of the smaller units are inside the larger unit. Meter Gram Liter Decimeter Decigram Deciliter Centimeter Centigram Centiliter Millimeter Milligram Milliliter ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 The basic unit 10 in the basic unit 100 in the basic unit 1000 in the basic unit ×10 ×10 ×10 m g l dm dg dl cm cg cl mm mg ml Moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit you must multiply because there are a lot of the smaller units inside of the larger unit.

  5. Converting Between Metric Units… 1,700 86 17 m = ________ cm 86,000 mg = ________ g Larger unit to a small unit… so multiply Smaller unit to a larger unit… so divide 17 m × 10 × 10 86,000 mg ÷ 10 ÷ 10÷ 10 98.1 0.083 9.81 dl = ________ cl 83 mm = ________ m Larger unit to a small unit… so multiply Smaller unit to a larger unit… so divide 9.81 dl × 10 83 mm ÷ 10 ÷ 10÷ 10 • Try converting some metric units of length, weight/mass and volume with your teammates. Raise your hand when you are complete so your teacher can check your solutions.

  6. Units which are larger than the basic units… • There are also units which are larger than the basic units: • 10 of the basic unit put together are called a decameter, decagram, or decaliter. • To remember this think of a decade. A decade is 10 years, while a “decaunit” has 10 units put together. • 100 of the basic unit put together are called a hectometer, hectogram, or a hectoliter. • 1,000 of the basic unit put together are called a kilometer, kilogram, or a kiloliter.

  7. Moving from a smaller unit to a larger unit you must dividebecause you must see how many groups of the smaller units are inside the larger unit. Kilometer Kilogram Kiloliter Hectometer Hectogram Hectoliter Decameter Decagram Decaliter Meter Gram Liter Decimeter Decigram Deciliter Centimeter Centigram Centiliter Millimeter Milligram Milliliter ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 1000 of the basic unit 100 of the basic unit 10 of the basic unit 100 in the basic unit 1000 in the basic unit 10 in the basic unit The basic unit ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 km kg kl hm hg hl dam dag dal m g l dm dg dl cm cg cl mm mg ml Moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit you must multiply because there are a lot of the smaller units inside of the larger unit.

  8. Mnemonic Device to remember the order of the Metric Units… Kilometer Kilogram Kiloliter Hectometer Hectogram Hectoliter Decameter Decagram Decaliter Meter Gram Liter Decimeter Decigram Deciliter Centimeter Centigram Centiliter Millimeter Milligram Milliliter ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 ÷10 1000 of the basic unit 100 of the basic unit 10 of the basic unit 100 in the basic unit 1000 in the basic unit 10 in the basic unit The basic unit ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 ×10 km kg kl hm hg hl dam dag dal m g l dm dg dl cm cg cl mm mg ml Milk.” (Milli…) By (Basic Unit) Drinking (Deci…) Chocolate (Centi…) Died (Deca…) “King (Kilo…) Henry (Hecto…)

  9. More Converting Between Metric Units… 230,000 60,000 230 km = ________ m 6,000 hg = ________ dag Larger unit to a small unit… so multiply Larger unit to a small unit… so multiply 230 km × 10 × 10× 10 6,000 hg × 10 8,200,000 0.72814 82 kl = __________ cl 72.814 dm = ________ dam Larger unit to a small unit… so multiply Smaller unit to a larger unit… so divide 82 dl × 10× 10× 10× 10× 10 72.814 mm ÷ 10 ÷ 10 • Try converting some metric units of length, weight/mass and volume with your teammates. Raise your hand when you are complete so your teacher can check your solutions.
