  1. Cultural differences in communication C

  2. Definitions: • Culture : social and intellectual formation . The totality of socially transmitted behaviour patterns , arts , beliefs, institutions , and all other products of human work and thought characteristic of a community or population . • Communication :The act of communicating and transmitting . The exchange of thoughts , messages, or the like , as speech , signals , or writing .

  3. Examples : Iran USA Could we speak in the same manner to an European public , Chinese , American , or Iranian ?

  4. Countries with a strong historical background such as : France , Italy , England . Their way to communicate is based on past references , historical characters , heroes . • Countries more or less new : such as : USA , Australia . Their way to communicate is based on the present or the future .

  5. Industrialised countries : politic of communication based on the individualism and the consumerism . Countries in development : politic of communication based on the solidarity and the collectivism .

  6. Religious countries : references on supernatural forces . example :the American presidents “God bless America “ “Tonight I ask for all the prayers for all those who grieve ……. And I pray to be to be comforted by a power greater…” l

  7. Recent examples of incomprehension in communication • Bush used the term “crusade” against terrorism which leads him to a conflict with the Arabic countries . “And the American people are beginning to understand . This Crusade , this war on terrorism , is going to take awhile .” The Bin Laden response : “We hope that these brothers are among the first martyrs in Islam’s battle in this era against the new Christian – Jewish crusade led by the big crusader Bush ….”

  8. Another term which causes conflict : The name of the campaign against terrorism :”infinite justice”. Several Islamic scholars objected “only Allah , can mete out infinite justice To avoid a misunderstanding Bush changed theses terms : “crusade “ mission” “infinite justice “ “liberte immuable ““

  9. Another example the term settler witch in the states represent the construction of the Nation . But for the colonised countries the perception is completely pejorative • Conclusion : To not consider the public to whom we speak is just an illusion of communication
