  2. Some side effects of leukemia such as feeling sick, having fevers, chills, night sweats, feeling fatigued and other flu-like symptoms. Some patients experience nausea or a feeling of fullness due to an enlarged liver and spleen; this can result in unintentional weight loss.

  3. Fevers and night sweats. • Frequent or unusual infections. • Weakness and fatigue. • Headaches. • Bruising of the skin and bleeding from the gums or rectum. • Bone pain. • Joint pain. • Swelling in the belly or pain on the left side of the belly or in the left shoulder from a swollen spleen. • Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, neck, or groin. • Decreased appetite and weight loss because you feel full and don't want to eat.

  4. Cigarette smoking. If you smoke cigarettes, now is the time to quit. Smoking puts you at risk for many types of cancer, including acute myelogenous leukemia. 1 in every 4 cases of AML is linked to smoking. • Exposure to benzene. Benzene is a chemical by product of coal and petroleum. It is used mainly is gasoline, however is contained in other things such as paints, solvents, plastics, pesticides and detergents. People who work in the manufacturing of these products may be putting themselves at risk for leukemia.

  5. Chemotherapy to kill leukemia cells using strong anti-cancer drugs; • Interferon therapy to slow the reproduction of leukemia cells and promote the immune system's anti-leukemia activity; • Radiation therapy to kill cancer cells by exposure to high-energy radiation; • Stem cell transplantation (SCT) to enable treatment with high doses of chemotherapy and radiation therapy; and • Surgery to remove an enlarged spleen or to install a venous access device (large plastic tube) to give medications and withdraw blood samples
