  1. IEEE-USA Pre-College Education Committee MeetingApril 1, 2005 – Las Vegas, NV Murty Polavarapu murtyp@ieee.org

  2. Susquehanna Section Recent ActivitiesLarry Brown, Professional Engineer and Past Chair of the Susquehanna Section, presented two sessions of the Computer Engineering field to about 40 high school students from ten high school districts on 2/24/2005.  The presentations were part of the Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) Engineers' Week Program.  This was reported to the membership in our April newsletter, which you can view at http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r2/susquehanna.Our Section also supported an Engineers Week display at Colonial Park Mall and distributed about 40 IEEE membership applications and about 25 student applications. We support an Education Outreach Committee (EOC) organized by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council.  The Council is comprised of members from all local Engineering societies, and is active year-round.  On 3/22/2005, Larry Brown met with 7 students at the Harrisburg SciTech High for a lunchtime, Brown Bag discussion about Electrical & Computer Engineering.  Numerous pertinent questions were answered about the technology, careers and engineering in general. Suggestions • I recall when were setting up one of these meetings, that we were looking around for a short presentation on Electrical and Computer Engineering, to possibly use as a lead in.  I believe a short presentation, because there is probably more benefit in a give-and-take discussion directly with students.  If it is a large group, then a PowerPoint presentation material might be useful.  Since a PowerPoint projector may not always be available, slide and transparency versions should also be produced.  I don't believe it should be a big advertisement for IEEE, although a credit at the end would be acceptable.  I doubt we have enough resources to produce a presentation ourselves, but could review anything produced or perhaps offer suggestions.

  3. Baltimore Section • Robot Challenge 2005 (tenth year)

  4. Northern Virginia Activities • Pre-College Chapters • Thomas Jefferson • Woodson • National Engineers Week Family Day • GOLD Pre-College Outreach • FIRST Robotics • Science and Engineering Fairs • eMerit Badges • TechXplore • Future City • Teacher In Service Training • Plan for August 2005

  5. Northern Virginia – FIRST Robotics Oakton High School Chantilly Academy VCU Regional “Entrepreneurship Award” VCU Regional “Best Website” award (www.ohsrobotics.org). VCU Regional “Woodie Flowers Award”

  6. Cleveland Section • Lately at the Cleveland Section meetings we have been talking about getting involved in education by tentatively holding technical lectures open to the general public and possibly teacher support type things, but these arent specifically pre-college.

  7. Lehigh Valley Section • Two years ago, members of the Lehigh Valley Section attended the robot competition sponsored by the Baltimore Section with the intent of developing a similar program for our area. • Everything came to a halt when we approached local school districts. The schools told us that IEEE would need to provide funding as well as materials. • Can you ask other Sections, such as Baltimore, to explain their programs and how they achieved success.

  8. Columbus Section • Planning for FIRST Robotics Team

  9. Awards • IEEE-USA Teacher – Engineer Partnership Award • IEEE EAB Teacher Award

  10. Plans for 2005 • Brainstorming Session • Plans being finalized
