The Pierre Auger Observatory • Auger is a “Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray” experiment (for ECR>1018eV) • 2 sites, to cover the whole sky: • South (Malargüe, Argentina) to be completed in 2006 • North (Colorado, USA), being designed • Uses 2 types of detectors to measure the extended air showers. • Čerenkov water tanks (, and electrons density and direction) • atmospheric fluorescence telescopes (track the core) VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Surface Detector Fuorescence Detector VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Current situation • Only the Southern site exists. • In August, • 800 out of 1600 tanks are taking data • 18 out of 24 telecopes are taking data • Will be completed in 2006 • This talk addresses South only • Northern site? Southern site, July 2005 Each dot is a tank, 1.5km apart. The 4 eyes are shown VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Auger data types • The events are stored in root format. • The sources are: • Surface Detector (SD):(FADC traces, time, calibration, monitoring) • Fluorescence Detector:(FADC, time, monitoring) • Atmosphere characterization and monitoring(Lidar, wind, temperature, etc...) VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Auger data collection, processing and storage • SD and FD data are sent to a local central facility (CDAS) where the root files are created and stored • The files are transferred to Lyon, France, where the events are analyzed and sorted according to certain requirements. In particular the so called hybrid events (SD & FD) are kept aside • Auger members can process data at Lyon or copy events to their home institution or laptop. VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Rates and needs The values presented here are based on August and September (800 tanks, 18 telescopes). • SD raw data: 174kB/day/tank • for 1600 tanks : 280MB/day or 102GB/year • FD raw data: 175MB/night/eye • For 4 eyes (24 tel.): 143GB/year • Processed data • For 1600 tanks, 4 eyes: ~500GB/year • Monitoring: • SD=144GB/y, Atmosphere 80MB/y • Total: 890 GB/year VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
Conclusion • Auger has a modest data storage need compared with current and future experiments. We still use MB and GB! • However, Auger will run for 20, may be 30 years • Probably the current values are overestimated. • The events that everyone is looking at fit in a laptop • Forgot to mention Monte Carlo data. It is now much less than real data, about 80GB. VI DOSAR – IFUSP/IFT – Philippe Gouffon
