  2. Where the Apaches Lived • The Apache moved from Canada to America in 1200 A.D. • They settled in the southwestern section of the U.S.

  3. The Apache Homes • An Apache family lived in a brush home called a wickiup. • A small hole was left in the top of the wickiup to let smoke out.

  4. The Family Life of Apaches • A couple was considered married if the bride’s family accepted the gifts the groom’s parents offered them. • The groom moved to the bride’s mother’s camp after they were married.

  5. The Apache’s Clothing • The women wore tanned deerskin wraparound skirts. • The men wore tanned deerskin breechcloths, buckskin leggings, and shirts with beads.

  6. The Apache’s Food • The Apache hunted buffalo, antelope, and deer. • They also made a drink from corn called tulapai.

  7. The Apache’s Crafts • Apache women carried all their family’s possessions in baskets. • A basket that carried water was called a tus.

  8. The Apache’s Children • The Apache girls continued to help their mothers throughout their entire lives. • The Apache parents rarely punished their children.

  9. The Apache Myths • The Apache never spoke the name of a dead relative. • Like most Native Americans, the Apache considered owls bad luck and messengers of bad news.
