  1. Learning Theory Approaches EDU 749 Angela Oster Sergio Villegas

  2. Volcano Project Objective: Learn about Volcanos and find some way to share what you learn... ready set go....

  3. Pragmatism Context: Things need to be relevant in order to be worth learning. Pragmatic Focus: Research volcano trends globally (by location). Compare geographic trends to historic incident of volcanos within 200 miles where you live.

  4. Pragmatism Pragmatic Focus: (Cont) Did your historic search find high volcanic activity? Write a hypothesis as to why or why not given what you know about global trends. Closing: How do current technologies predict volcanic activity and are there any predictions near where you live?

  5. Cognitivism Background: Cognitive process are extremely important in learning. Instructor should be aware of background information and personal ability. Unique approach to project: Given 5 famous volcanos, choose one and research life around the time of its eruption. Write fake journal entries that demonstrate features of volcanos that fit the requirements of the project.

  6. Cognitivism Cognitivist Approach (Cont) In addition to your journal, choose one of the following fact practicing activities in order to prepare for your assessment. • Make Flashcards • Make a jeopardy game with changing difficulty question levels • Draw a detailed diagraph and label key features. large and in color. • Take a practice test and do write ups on questions missed. • Choose an information source of your choice and write complete cornell notes on information collected.

  7. Behaviorism *Students will work independently on the research and PowerPoint presentation of an assigned volcano *Each slide in the PowerPoint template has been provided to create an organized project with specific concepts *Students will be given deadlines for each PowerPoint slide. Upon completion they will be assessed on that specific concept. Students completing the task with 80% and higher will receive an animated graphic for their slide *After completing the PowerPoint presentation students will be assessed on their knowledge of volcanoes based on the research topics set by the teacher (summative assessment)

  8. Constructivism *Student will work independently to create a PowerPoint presentation of a volcano that he/she has chosen to learn about *Student will take what they have learned about volcanoes and decide how to best set up the slides on their power point *Information learned will determine the amount of slides the student presents *After presentations, students discuss the information they discovered about their chosen volcano and possibly compare and contrast their volcano to another student's *The presentation and discussion will inform the teacher everything the students learned about volcanoes (formative assessment)

  9. Multiple-Intelligences Unit will focus on aquiring knowledge about volcanos, while utilzing the following learning styles: Verbal/Linguistic- picture story/recorded or performed about a volcano "once upon a time there was a volcano". Problem Solving sequencing- create a multi slide diagram with explanations that cover volcano formation. Visual Spacial- 2-D world map of volanic activity/ compared with fault lines and conclusions done. Kinesthetic-Build a Baking soda Volcano.

  10. Multiple-Intelligences Musical-Borrow melody from pop song and change lyrics to volcano facts and vocab. Interpersonal-Each student picks a unique world/historical volcano and creates a lesson and shares with group. Naturalistic-Bring in obsidian for students to play and make observations...draw. Intrapersonal- Choose 5 of the 7 listed as their unit plan.
