  2. What is bullying? • Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. It is repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviourintended to cause fear, distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. • (OCDSB Anti-Bullying Awareness publication)

  3. Bullying can happen anywhere. • It is not a normal part of growing up. • It can cause serious and lasting harm.

  4. What can bullying look like? • PHYSICAL BULLYING: • hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property, spitting, and other intimidating behaviours

  5. VERBAL BULLYING • name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments

  6. SOCIAL BULLYING • excluding others from a group or spreading gossip or rumours about them

  7. CYBER BULLYING • spreading rumours and hurtful • comments through the use of cell phones, email, text messaging and social networking sites

  8. How can I help? • In the majority of cases, help from peers stops bullying quickly.

  9. W.I.T.S. • What is WITS? • WITS represents strategies you can use when you are bothered, annoyed, or bullied by someone else.

  10. What should I do if I’m being bullied? • Tell the person who is bullying you to stop, if you feel safe doing so. • Get support: Try opening up to the people you trust, talk to your friends, your parents, or your teacher. • Report it: Reporting bullying is not tattle-talling, it’s self-protection.

  11. What about the bystander? • In most cases, bullying takes place in front of others. Bystanders often avoid getting involved because they are afraid of becoming a target themselves or making the situation worse. • Standing up almost always stops bullying behaviour.

  12. Bystanders, you can help stop bullying! • Assertively and respectfully tell the child who is bullying to stop • Give support to the child who is victimized

  13. Refuse to join in - do not place yourself at risk • Get help • Report the bullying to a responsible adult

  16. Bullying Myths and Facts(www.bullying.org) • Myth: “Bullying is just, stage, a normal part of • life. I went through it my kids will too. ” • Fact: Bullying is not “normal” or socially acceptable behaviour. We give bullies power by our acceptance of this behaviour.

  18. Bullying Myths and Facts(www.bullying.org) • Myth: “Just stand up for yourself and hit them back” • Fact: While there are some times when people can be forced to defend themselves, hitting back usually makes the bullying worse and increases the risk for serious physical harm.

  21. Consequences for bullying • PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE: • Warning • Apology • Discussion with Vice-Principal or Principal • Communication with parents • Meeting with parents • In-school sanction • Suspension • Over 12 years old: Criminal offence
