  2. Sphinx Facts • The Sphinx has been a symbol of Egypt since ancient times. • The Sphinx sits in a shallow depression to the south of the pyramid of the pharaoh Khafre. • The Sphinx is half lion, half human.

  3. Sphinx • There are three passages into or under the sphinx, two of them of obscure origin. The one of known cause is a short dead end shaft behind the head. • The sphinx is a zoomorphic mythological figure which is depicted as a lion that has a human head. • The sphinx has origins in sculpted figures of other kingdoms.

Sphinx • The sphinx of Egypt lies near the Great Pyramid situated about six miles west of Cairo. • It is the largest single sculpted statue in the world, carved from bedrock. • The Egyptians built the sphinx to guard important areas such as tombs and temples. • The sphinx is huge! It is 241 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 60 feet high.
