  3. Characteristics • Bilateral symmetry • Segmented body • Hard exoskeleton • Jointed legs • Many limbs

  4. Characteristics (Cont’d) • Eukaryotic • No cell wall • Exoskeleton made of chitin • Heterotrophs Habitats: • Almost anywhere • Deep sea, coastal waters • Land • Rivers and streams, various types of forests, grasslands.

Carcinusmaenas • Common shore crab • Structure: has a carapace (the body) up to 60mm long and 90mm wide, with 5 teeth behind each eye, and has 8 legs • Reproduction: Female releases eggs and the male’s sperm fertilizes them. The fertilized eggs are kept with the mother in a big spongy ball until they are ready to hatch. • Nutrition: Small crabs, worms, algae, and other arthropods • Habitat: Found on the shore from the high water mark to the depths of around 60 metres. They can also live in estuaries (Ex. Rivers or streams that have a connection to the ocean)

Pandinus imperator • Emperor scorpion • Largest in the world • Black, glows under UV light • Native to Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone) • Found in tr]opical rainforests & open savannas • Burrows beneath soil & rocks • Eats insects, spiders, mice, lizards • Reproduces sexually by age of 4; 9-32 is the average litter. Male drops sperm and females fertilizes through mating dance

Arthropods and People- Importance to Society • Arthropods take up 75 % of the world’s species • Natural processes in the earth’s terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems contribute to function of the natural world as a biological system of arthropods. • Great recyclers and decomposers. • Larger crustaceans are used as food throughout the world. • Approximately two-thirds of all flowering plants are pollinated by arthropods which provide food and keep the air and water clean in the environment.

  8. Importance to technology • Arthropods are dominant and most diverse component of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Confusion in those systems can first be detected by change in the community structure of their species. • Basis for the practice of ecological monitoring, for example by sampling the insect faunas of rivers and lakes; insects are an important source of data for environmental impact assessment.

Impact of Arthropods in Climate change • Increased population growth of arthropods • Changes in insects • Increased risk of invasion by migrant pests (impact both food and crop security) • Reduced effectiveness of crop protection technologies • Insect transmitted diseases • Consequences on diversity and abundance of arthropods.

  10. Impact on Environment • Pest outbreaks might occur more frequently • Host plant resistance, biopesticides, natural enemies, and synthetic chemicals will be less effective as a result of increase in temperatures and UV radiation • Increasing temperatures may result in a greater ability to increase in insect species limited by low temperatures at higher latitudes, extending their migration range.
