  1. The goal of the Alliance is to reduce the nationwide prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 and to inspire young people to develop lifelong healthy habits.

  2. Nearly 1 in 3 children in the United States are overweight or obese. • 1 in 25… • Is not overweight or obese • Has recess in school • Has free time physical activity • Drinks < 2 cans of soda / day • Eats veggies almost every day • Won’t develop type II diabetes

  3. There’s a place for everyone at the table We believe that we need multi-faceted solutions and diverse partners to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic – even unlikely partners. Though we welcome everyone to the table, we won’t accept funds from entities with which we are negotiating solutions. Currently, that list includes the beverage, food, and health insurance industries. Micro- and macro-level strategies create the perfect storm We focus on systemic and sustainable approaches that balance science-based practices with innovative strategies. The end goal is to put ourselves out of business We aggressively pursue results and keep score. We’ll be successful when the day comes the notion of childhood obesity in the US seems like a strange and unlikely concept. Societal norms are changed by people, not organizations We are only as successful as the change we inspire in communities, schools, families, and youth. To that end, our story is the stories of local successes in schools, communities, healthcare settings, and among kids themselves. Alliance Values & Principles

  4. What We Do • By engaging and activating leaders who can create healthier environments for kids and their families, we: Support more than 14,000 schools in all 50 states to transform their campuses into healthier places. Activate out-of-school time facilities to increase access to healthier food, beverages, and physical activity throughout their programs and to activate youth to be leaders for a healthy lifestyle. Broker voluntary agreements with industry that facilitate better access to healthier foods, beverages, and health care for children and their families.

  5. What We’ve Achieved • The Healthy Schools Program has helped 80 percent of participating schools in the Healthy Schools Program implement new, health-promoting policy and systems changes. • The Industry Initiative has convened 13 leading food manufacturers and purchasing organizations to make products for healthier school meals more affordable and available to more than 36 million students. • The Kids’ Movement has built the capacity of more than 400 local afterschool programs and community-based organizations to offer health education and leadership programs.

  6. What We’ve Achieved The Alliance School Beverage Agreement has led to an 88 percent reduction in total beverage calories shipped to U.S. schools between 2004 and 2009. The Alliance Healthcare Initiative has led to more than 2.6 million children gaining access to preventative health benefits.
