What is it? • Originally created to honor the Stonewall riots in 1969-considered the tipping point for liberation • 1st Parade was in June of 1970 at the one year anniversary of the riots • Known as the “Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day” march • By 1980’s many major cities had their own parades including some outside of the US such as Moscow and Nepal

  3. Purpose • Recognize the historical impact of individuals: • Locally • Nationally • Internationally • Celebrate Diversity

  4. Activities • Parades • Picnics • Parties • Workshops • Concerts • Memorials including those lost to hate crimes and to HIV/AIDS

  5. Who Does It Involve? • Everyone that wants to join in

  6. Opinions: the negative • “Why do we have to break away from normal life, why can’t we become a part of it…” • “Things would be better off without them(pride parades)” • Gay Pride Parades “perpetuate all the negative stereotypes about homosexuals…maybe it’s time to tone down some of these festivals.”

  7. Opinions: the positive • They “make people uncomfortable so that they can push the boundaries of acceptance” • Brings a community together • Provides a supportive family environment • Encourages exploration of ones sexuality
