  2. Roman Food for Commoners A Plebeian diet, or common people, consisted mainly of cereals, breads, corn, and wine. Wine at this time was extremely popular, although it was not like modern wine. Ancient Roman wine was more watered down, with added spices.

  3. Upper Class Roman Food Upper class Romans, such as government officials, ate a variety of exotic foods, like cheese, bird, fish, eggs, sausage, etc. These items were much more expensive than the breads and cereals found in a common household.

  5. Roman Festivals • Important part in religious life • Faerie-holy day • Martius(March)- first month, named after Mars • Had festivals to honor the gods • Had many games

  6. 3 Kinds of Festivals 1) Stative, annual holidays with fixed dates. 2) Conceptive, annual holidays that could change dates. 3)Imperative, were randomly announced.

  7. Many Holidays Each Month -Ianuarius = 8 -Februarius = 11 -Martius = 11 -Aprilis = 10 -Maius = 9 -Iunius = 15 -Quinctilius = 16 -Augustus = 14 -September = 8 -October = 14 -November = 6 -December = 14

  9. Saturnalia • most important holiday • in honor of Saturn, God of Farming • slaves dined with their master and did not work • gave gifts to each other

  10. Lupercalia • One of the oldest in the world • Ward of evil spirits, purify city • Longest lasting festival • Started around 753 B.C. • Feb 13-15,associated with Valentine's Day • Lupercus-God of shepherds

  11. Other Main Festivals • Agonalia- Jan. 9- for Janus, god of gates and doorways • Ides- for specific god/goddess depending on month • parentalia- Feb 13-21- remember the dead • Fors Fortuna- Jun. 24-to Fortuna, goddess of luck • Opalia-Dec.19-for goddess Ops

  12. Contributions to Western World (Food) • 3 course meal (starter, main dish, dessert) • Farming and aqueducts • Eating with wine • Had many feasts
