  2. During the early 20th century, agriculture began to change. Old systems of farming were no longer effective. Crop prices were low.

  3. Growth of Virginia’s Cities People movedfrom rural to urban areas for economic opportunities. Urban = “the city” Rural = “the country”

  4. TechnologicalDevelopments in: Transportation Roads Railroads Streetcars Helped cities GROW!

  5. Coal Mining Spurred Growth Of Virginia towns and cities as people moved away from the countryside to find jobs.

  6. Federal Jobs  Washington, D.C. Since the end of World War II, during the 20th Century, Northern Virginia has experienced growth due to increases in the number of federal jobs located in the region.

  7. Computer Technology In the late 20th Century and the early 21st Century 2000-NOW, Northern Virginia and the Tidewater region have grown due to computer technology.

  8. Reasons People Come to Virginia • People have moved to Virginia from many other states and nations for: • Jobs • Freedom • The enjoyment of Virginia’s beauty and quality of life

  9. Woodrow Wilson • A 20th Century President who wrote a plan for world peace. • The League of Nations • Failed because the United States never joined • Was a model for the United Nations (which exists today)

  10. George C. Marshall A military leader who created an economic plan to ensure world peace. After World War II, Europe was in ruins. His plan helped European countries get back on their feet after the war.
